PTS Recreation Leader I and II

The City of Santa Clarita is recruiting for part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) Recreation Leader I and IIs to work directly with the Adult Sports Recreation Program. Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor or Program Specialist, this position will provide residents with a variety of quality recreational programs and events in a safe and fun environment.
This position may work up to 20 hours per week and requires the ability to work various hours that will require weekends, evenings, and some holidays.
Adult Sports programming hours run Monday–Friday from 4:00 – 10:30 p.m. and/or Sundays all day.
Recreation Leader I
$ $19.16 per hour
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepares facilities for use; assists in the organization, set-up, break-down, and clean-up of a variety of facilities and fields
- Assists in the implementation of programs, leagues, and events
- Provides customer service to program participants and the general public, including responding to public inquiries, providing accurate program information, and fulfilling customer needs over the phone, through email, and onsite
- Assists in maintaining program documents and files
- Assists in the operations, set-up, and clean-up of sports facilities and programs
- Assists with organizing supplies and equipment bags for staff and coaches
- Uses registration software to process registrations and produce membership cards
- Assists with money-handling, including processing payments
- Ensures safety of parks and maintains awareness of emergency procedures; responds to emergencies and performs First Aid as needed, and reports incidents and accidents to appropriate staff
- Organizes, prioritizes, and follows up on work assignments
- Follows and enforces City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
- Attends meetings and training sessions as required
- Performs other duties and activities as directed by the Recreation and Community Services Supervisor or Program Specialist
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Six months of volunteer or work experience in the field of recreation, including sports programming and facility operations, or other related field
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire, Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid certifications
Recreation Leader II
$ $20.59 per hour
Recreation Leader II includes all of the responsibilities of the Recreation Leader I, in addition to the following:
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists in the coordination of Adult Sport programs, leagues, and events
- Completes and reviews incident and accident reports
- Handles monetary transactions, including accepting payments, following close-out procedures, and managing refunds
- Tracks and maintains program calendars, site reservations, and program participation
- Assists with the operation of other program areas, such as Aquatics and Outdoor Recreation, as requested
- Reviews materials for use on website, brochures, and flyers, and makes suggestions for revisions
- Performs a wide variety of office duties, including ordering supplies, filing, and organizing
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED or equivalent
- Valid Class C California Driver's License and a safe driving record is required
- Minimum one year of experience in the field of recreation, including sports programming and facility operations, or other related field
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire, Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid certifications
- Knowledge of recreation and sports programming
- Strong customer service skills and the ability to handle conflict, issues, and concerns with youth, teens, and parents
- Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and positively, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of tasks in an effective and timely manner, for self and others
- Knowledge of computer systems, specifically Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Strong work ethic, proactive, and the ability to learn quickly
- Ability to manage fiscal duties responsibly
- Ability to make sound decisions within established guidelines and be a creative problem solver
- Ability to be a strong team member, and work both independently and as part of a work group to effectively provide quality recreation programs
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to observe safety principles and work in a safe manner
- Ability to follow and enforce City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
- Ability to perform general office duties relevant to program
- Ability to lift, drag, push files, paper, documents, and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds may be required; position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, etc.

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.
In compliance with California law, positions working with children are required to be mandated child abuse reporters. A mandated reporter is an individual who is obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.
PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours.
