Position Summary
A Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides care, support, and assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or other special needs. The DSP helps individuals achieve their personal goals, develop skills, and live as independently as possible while ensuring their health, safety, and dignity.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist individuals with daily living activities, including personal care, hygiene, dressing, meal preparation, and medication administration.
- Support individuals in developing and maintaining social skills, communication, and community involvement.
- Implement individualized service plans (ISPs) and behavioral support plans.
- Provide transportation to appointments, community outings, and recreational activities.
- Monitor and document individuals' progress, health status, and daily activities.
- Ensure a safe, clean, and supportive environment.
- Advocate for the rights, choices, and inclusion of individuals in all aspects of their lives.
- Communicate effectively with team members, families, and other professionals involved in care.
- Respond to emergencies and follow agency policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED required; additional coursework or certification in human services preferred.
- Experience: Prior experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or in a caregiving role preferred.
- Skills:
- Compassionate, patient, and dependable
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Basic computer and documentation skills
- Requirements:
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Ability to pass background checks and drug screening
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
Work Environment
- Work may be performed in residential homes, day programs, or community settings.
- PRN work hours.
