Flux-Cored Pipe Welder–Fitter (Heavy Steel Fabrication)

Location: Columbia, SC (Southeast)

Industry: Heavy Engineering / Metals — steel products serving water, pipework, and gas sectors

Pay: $25–$32 per hour, experience-based, plus 7% shift differential for 2nd shift

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 1st shift (6:00am–4:30pm) or 2nd shift (4:00pm–2:30am)

A day on the floor

Kick off your shift by preparing your welding setup. You'll select the right electrode or feed flux-cored wire into your gun, connect leads, and dial in amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse according to spec. With power live, you strike arc and begin your run—watching puddle behavior, listening for the right tone, and reading bead formation to hit the required penetration. You'll work primarily in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions.

Between passes you'll verify bead size and quality, remove slag and spatter, and transition to the next operation. When pipe sections arrive flagged by inspection—or that you've identified by sight—you'll stage them on the repair rack, prep by grinding and preheating as needed, and execute the repair. Throughout the shift, you'll reference drawings, diagrams, and written procedures to plan layout, assembly, and tack sequences. You'll also dismantle, straighten, reshape, and reassemble components to return products to spec.

What you'll handle
  • Set up welding equipment; select electrodes or thread FCAW wire in portable gun
  • Connect cables and configure amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse per welding procedure
  • Energize power supply and perform controlled arc starts
  • Guide the electrode/gun along the joint, maintaining arc length and travel speed for proper fusion
  • Produce welds in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions
  • Inspect bead size and conformance; chip and clean slag and spatter
  • Locate pipe repair areas (pre-marked or via visual inspection) and position on repair racks
  • Prep joints: grind, preheat, and otherwise condition material prior to welding
  • Review drawings, diagrams, specifications, and instructions to determine fit-up and weld requirements
  • Select equipment; plan layout, assembly, and tack welding sequences
  • Repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts
What you bring
  • Hands-on FCAW experience and proven carbon arc gouging skills
  • Ability to work either 1st or 2nd shift (Mon–Fri)
  • Fluency in reading blueprints, pipe drawings, and welding procedures
  • Comfort with safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • AWS certification preferred
