EHS Engineer - San Diego, CA
Salary Range: $92,000 - $97,000 Base + Bonus
JOB PURPOSE
The EHS Engineer supports the medical device component manufacturing sites, ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations while driving a strong safety culture. This role partners with operations, engineering, and leadership teams to manage compliance, reduce risk, and foster continuous improvement in EHS performance.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES/JOB DUTIES
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local EHS regulations, permits, and reporting requirements.
- Develop, implement, and maintain EHS programs, including IH and OH programs, and management systems (e.g., ISO 14001/45001).
- Conduct risk assessments, job safety analyses, and incident investigations; implement corrective actions.
- Support hazardous materials handling, waste management, emissions, and sustainability initiatives.
- Deliver EHS training, lead audits/inspections, and track performance metrics (TRIR, LTIR, waste, energy use, etc.).
- Partner with teams to integrate EHS into new processes, projects, and management of change.
- Coordinate emergency response planning, evacuation procedures, and business continuity support.
- Liaise with regulatory agencies and ensure compliance with customer EHS requirements.
- Drive, track, and report participation in leading safety activities and initiatives.
- Partner with Safety Champions to drive engagement and promote a strong safety culture.
- Support continuous improvement of EHS programs by identifying opportunities and best practices.
- Administer SDS, REACH, and MDS programs for materials used and processed at the sites.
- Ensure contractor and supplier adherence to EHS requirements during site activities.
- Frequent travel between San Diego and Oceanside sites.
- Additional occasional travel required for off-site meetings and/or training.
QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, or related field.
- 3 -5 years of EHS experience in manufacturing (medical device or regulated industry preferred).
- Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and California EHS regulations.
- Experience with risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective/preventive action systems.
- Hands-on experience with hazardous materials, waste management, and industrial
- Certifications in CSP, CIH, CHMM, or ISO 14001/45001 auditor.
- Understanding of engineering controls, PPE selection/use, ergonomics, and fire/life safety systems.
- Proficiency with EHS management software, incident reporting tools, and MS Office Suite.
- Understanding of lean manufacturing and how it integrates with EHS (safe work design, ergonomics, Kaizen).
