Per Diem Clinician, Winthrop CLEAR Program

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Boston Emergency Services Team (BEST) Criminal Justice Diversion clinician will work collaboratively with the Winthrop Police Department and the Winthrop Health Department to respond to selected law enforcement calls for service as a crisis response specialist. In their role, the clinician will provide crisis intervention, psychological first aid, mediation and linkages to appropriate and available community services, with a primary focus on youth and adolescents, and their families.
Additionally, they will collaborate with the larger Winthrop community, including Winthrop Public Schools, to identify families or individuals with behavioral health or substance misuse challenges. Community partners include but are not limited to the Winthrop School Department, Winthrop Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services and the courts. For identified persons, the clinician may perform outreach in an attempt to divert them from the criminal justice system and towards appropriate care and services.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
This clinician will work collaboratively with the Winthrop Police and other community agencies, and will be available to assist officers and providers with individuals exhibiting signs of mental distress.
The clinician will provide assessments on-site, in the community, or at the police district.
The clinician will assist in delivering rapid access to community mental health, substance misuse and psychiatry services, including urgent linkage to other components of the BEST system.
When appropriate, the clinician will assess for and administer Section 12 involuntary psychiatric holds or assist and support family members in obtaining a Section 35 for involuntary substance misuse treatment.
The clinician will partner with local agencies in formulating plans for appropriate levels of care for identified individuals who are in psychiatric crisis.
In collaboration with the Clinical Supervisor, the clinician will identify ways to further engage youth and their families, including facilitating groups, as is appropriate.
In conjunction with the Winthrop Health Department, the clinician will assist in gathering statistical data related to law enforcement calls involving a component of behavioral health, and will work to identify gaps in service.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Master's Degree in social work, mental health counseling or related field required
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
License eligible required
Must be able to successfully pass a CORI
EXPERIENCE:
Two + (2) years of fulltime or equivalent part-time experience in the field of behavioral health with a diverse range of populations served.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of community resources and agencies that serve families affected by trauma or homicide.
Experience working with crisis intervention services desirable.
Ability to function and make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work on an interdisciplinary team.
Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of racial and ethnic populations.
An organized work style, good follow through skills and ability to keep organized written documentation.
Demonstrated skills in the provision of services in a multicultural environment. Experience in health or hospital settings desirable.
Bilingual or multi-lingual skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the patient population served is a plus.
Preference given to applicants who reflect the cultural and language diversity of the Boston Medical Center patient population.
Successful applicants will have extensive knowledge of mental health and substance use disorders, conflict resolution and crisis intervention.
Through the role, the clinician will gain a basic knowledge of the criminal justice system through on the job learning, but the ideal candidate must have the ability to: understand law enforcement culture, procedures and general orders and establish and maintain rapport with both police officers and an increasingly diverse community.
Compensation Range:
$29.57- $43.03This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
