The Senior Accountant role is ideal for a mission-driven accounting professional who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced nonprofit environment. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the financial integrity and operational success of two affiliated nonprofit organizations, LA84 Foundation (a private foundation) and The Play Equity Fund (a public charity). With a focus on general ledger accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance, the Senior Accountant will play a critical role in ensuring accurate and timely financial operations. This includes preparing journal entries and reconciliations, managing intercompany transactions, supporting grant tracking and reporting, and assisting with audits and year-end close. In addition, this role will have the opportunity to oversee the transition of routine accounting functions from external consultants to in-house operations, ensuring continuity, accuracy, and process improvement.

The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in nonprofit accounting, advanced Excel skills, and a proactive approach to improving systems and processes. Experience with QuickBooks Online, grant accounting, and investment accounting is highly valued. Reporting to the Director of Finance and Operations, this position will work closely with department leaders and external partners to support strategic financial decision-making. Success in this role requires a detail-oriented, solutions-focused approach, along with a collegial mindset and strong relationship-building skills.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

The Senior Accountant will have the following job responsibilities:

General Ledger Accounting

· Prepare timely and accurate month-end journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations (areas include investments, prepaid expenses, payroll, fringe benefits, accrued expenses)

· Record bank transactions and prepare bank and credit card reconciliations

· Review revenue and expenses for proper recognition, coding, and classification

· Ensure all finance and accounting operations comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and federal and state laws and regulations

· Oversee the transition of accounting tasks from external consultants to internal processes, ensuring accuracy and continuity

Budgeting

· Track grant revenue and grant expenses, reconcile grant budgets, and prepare grant reporting for management

· Assist the Director and budget managers in developing and monitoring departmental, grant or project, and organizational budgets

· Review monthly budget variances and provide explanations

Reporting & Allocations

· Prepare monthly financial statements, including consolidated financial statements and stand-alone financial statements for both entities

· Monitor shared expenses between the two affiliated non-profit organizations and prepare allocations and intercompany transactions

· Compile details and support for state and federal lobbying reports

· Perform fiscal year-end close activities and assist with activities and requirements of external auditors and tax preparers

Policies & Processes

· Develop and maintain policies and procedures manual

· Continually seek opportunities to streamline and improve finance and accounting operations through technology

· Other duties as assigned to meet organizational requirements

Requirements

· Bachelor's degree in accounting required

· 2-4 years non-profit organization experience required

· Advanced proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, lookup functions)

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office required

· CPA license a plus

· QuickBooks Online experience preferred

· Grant tracking experience preferred

· Intercompany accounting experience a plus

· Investment accounting experience a plus

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collegial and collaborative approach

· Ability to work in fast-paced and growing environment in a shared office space

WORKING CONDITIONS:

· General office environment, depending on health and safety precautions. May be temporarily a hybrid remote/in-office environment depending on manager and work responsibilities.

· Physical demands include lifting and moving equipment and supplies up to 25 pounds, visual acuity in reviewing detailed computer records, physical requirements related to sports activities and periodic travel.

· Occasional weekend, late afternoon, and evening hours.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $93, $104,000.00 per year
