Job Description:
The Manager, Data Center Utility Projects will support AREP's PowerHouse Data Center platform in its collaboration with local utilities and energy suppliers across the county. This position will be responsible for managing the execution of data center energy deployment within the growing PowerHouse portfolio of data center campuses. The candidate will be directly responsible for all project utility execution tasks, including but not limited to management of project communications, scheduling, consultant and contractor selection, and overall utility execution.
This position reports to the VP of Data Center Utilities. The candidate will interact with local utilities, energy suppliers, consultants, design and engineering teams, data center end users, equipment suppliers, capital partners, and other project stakeholders as necessary.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead all data center project utility execution tasks throughout the entire project life cycle.
- Establish and foster collaborative relationships with key project stakeholders.
- Support execution activities in the design and construction of data center substations, transmission line extensions, and utility infrastructure.
- Develop and track specific tenant requirements for electric service
- Implement and report on project status on a regular basis.
- Develop documentation to track, understand, and communicate processes for delivering critical utilities to data center development sites.
- Develop and track required utility agreements, power rates, and infrastructure requirements in multiple utility markets
- Collaborate with data center development team to ensure utility capacities and schedules align with overall development schedule.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Key Competencies:
To perform the typical tasks and duties of the position successfully, the knowledge, skills and/or abilities listed below are required:
- Strong understanding of electric transmission and distribution systems, substation concepts, and electric utility infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of power redundancy principles
- Strong project management/project execution experience
- Knowledge of the data center specific electric utility requirements
- Knowledge of utility agreements, tariffs, and power contracts.
- Skilled in developing, coordinating and maintaining project schedules.
- Ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines and generate detail-oriented work-product.
- Ability to develop strong relationship with utility stakeholders
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with senior management, technical consultants, and fellow employees.
- Strong working knowledge of computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite. Cloud based project management software a plus (Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud).
- Self-starter and team-player with ability to identify problems and develop creative solutions in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision.
- Analytical ability to collect, evaluate, and analyze information to make decisions that affect the overall operations or results.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in technical or business discipline; power engineering, electrical engineering, business, or other related majors preferred. Advanced engineering, business, or other related degrees are a plus.
- 3+ years of data center utility experience, design, engineering, or construction experience; prefer substantive involvement in hyperscale data center projects. Experience working with local utility companies in Indiana, Chicago and Pennsylvania is highly preferred.
- 25%-50% travel required to project sites in Indiana, Chicago and Pennsylvania
