Ready to keep our parks clean, safe, and welcoming? The Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking a motivated and experienced Park Caretaker III tolead efforts in maintaining and enhancing our outdoor spaces in the Waipio area. This full-time, permanent position involves supervising and participating in the care of lawn and landscape areas, as well as the beautification of parks, playgrounds, and facilities.

What You'll Do

  • Lead crew and perform propagation, planting, mowing, edging, pruning, trimming, and watering of playing fields and landscaped areas, apply fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, soil conditioners, and other chemicals, and operate pick-up trucks, utility vehicles, and farm machines;
  • Repair irrigation systems, maintenance equipment, play equipment, fences, tables, benches, roadways, parking lots, and structures, prepare work orders for major repairs and renovations, and assist with repair tasks;
  • Clean facilities daily, including sweeping, mopping, cleaning restrooms, offices, locker rooms, and disposing of trash;
  • Prepare requests and purchasing materials, supplies, tools, and equipment, while performing regular inventory checks;
  • Assist with work assignments and schedule, train and evaluate employees, enforce safety regulations, prepare accident reports, manage leave and attendance reports, provide public information, check permits, and enforce department rules; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Special Work Requirements

  • Work schedule is from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with varying days off.
  • May be required to work weekends, nights, and holidays.
  • Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in manual labor and semi-skilled tasks involving the care, maintenance and beautification of landscaped areas; performance of semi-skilled or skilled building or mechanical trades experience; and operation or repair of passenger and/or tractor type mowers.

Key Competencies and Skills Needed:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
  • Knowledge of the proper identification, care, cultivation and management of turf, ground cover, plants, shrubs, and trees.
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices used in building and ground maintenance and repair work.
  • Knowledge of the operation, repair and maintenance of tractor type mowers.
  • Knowledge of the proper use and operation of tools and light powered equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, lay out, assign and review work of others.
  • Ability to follow and give clear oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to detect and recognize turf and plant diseases and initiate methods for their eradication and control.
  • Ability to care for and cultivate plants, trees, shrubs and ground cover.
  • Ability to perform a variety of building and grounds maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to operate and maintain tractor type mowers.
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with staff and general public, including the enforcement of rules and regulations.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:

1) Valid driver's license (Type 3), as required.

2) Obtain and maintain from City Health Services, Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) test, prior to appointment.
