About Security Services Department:

The Department of Security Services is dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all staff, volunteers, and visitors to the museum and its campus. This includes safeguarding the buildings, property, and art collections from all potential threats. This is achieved through several key functions: regular patrols of the museum and grounds; enforcement of established rules and regulations; surveillance and monitoring using cameras and other technologies; providing assistance to visitors and employees; reporting and responding to potential hazards and suspicious activities; and responding to emergency situations. These efforts directly support the Commonwealth of Virginia's cultural enrichment goals and align with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts' strategic plan.

General Information:

We are currently seeking applications from attentive, efficient, and highly motivated professionals to join our Security Services Department as Assistant Deputy Director or Security Services.

In this role, you will support the museum by overseeing the daily operations and strategic direction of the Security Services team in collaboration with the Chief/Director of Security Services and Risk Management. The Assistant Deputy Director will play a key role in guiding the department through the upcoming Expansion Project, providing leadership in personnel management, operational planning, and administrative coordination to ensure a secure and seamless experience for staff, visitors, and collections.

  • Demonstrates exceptional computer literacy, including demonstrated experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat, security databases, and Microsoft OneDrive, or equivalent.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and appearance, including wearing a uniform as needed.
  • Ability to function efficiently, professionally and graciously in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment providing excellent leadership and crisis response and ability to exercise mature, independent judgment.
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the responsibilities and professional conduct of sworn, armed Special Conservators of the Peace and the methods used in accident and claims investigations.
  • Demonstrates strong administrative and organizational skills, including preparing complete and effective reports, developing written SOPs, maintaining complete documentation in a well-organized filing system, leading meetings and giving presentations, and effectively disseminating information to staff or stakeholders.
  • Ability to create, plan, and execute, and report on short-term and long-term departmental strategic goals and initiatives.
  • Strong customer service skills; understanding and support of the VMFA.

Certifications & Relevant Experience:

  • Ability to obtain experience with or knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia agency purchasing regulations and processes, including use of eVA and SPCCs within probationary year.
  • Ability to obtain Special Conservator of the Peace ("SCOP") certification with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services within probationary year.
  • Ability to obtain CPR/AED/First Aid certification or similar within probationary year.
  • Prior experience in law enforcement, security, the military, or related fields.
  • Knowledge, skills, abilities, and/or competencies typically obtained through the completion of an academic curriculum or program such as law enforcement, criminal justice, private security, or equivalent level of practical experience.
