Position Overview
The Wound Care Specialist is a licensed Nurse Practitioner (NP) with advanced training and certification in wound management. This role is responsible for providing expert wound evaluation, treatment, and ongoing care for patients across various settings. The Wound Care Specialist may also be tasked with mentoring and training other Nurse Practitioners who are new to wound care.
This position plays a vital role in promoting optimal healing outcomes, preventing complications, and supporting continuity of care through evidence-based wound management practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of patient wounds, including size, depth, tissue type, and signs of infection.
- Develop individualized wound care plans, including selection of dressings, grafting techniques, and advanced wound therapies.
- Perform wound care procedures such as debridement, graft applications, and advanced dressing changes.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated and effective care.
- Provide patient and family education on wound care management, infection prevention, and at-home care techniques.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Serve as a clinical mentor and provide hands-on training for Nurse Practitioners without prior wound care experience.
- Stay current with best practices, new technologies, and evidence-based guidelines in wound management.
Qualifications
- Education: Master's Degree in Nursing; valid Nurse Practitioner license in practicing state.
- Certification: Wound Care Certification (WCC, CWCN, or equivalent) required.
- Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of direct wound care experience, including proficiency in grafting procedures.
- Skills: Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and procedural skills; ability to teach and mentor peers; excellent communication and teamwork.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in mobile wound care, outpatient clinics, or long-term care facilities.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and digital documentation systems.
- Advanced training in biologic or synthetic skin substitutes.
Work Conditions
- May involve travel to patient homes, nursing facilities, and clinical sites.
- Requires adherence to infection control and patient safety standards.
- Flexibility to work independently or within a multidisciplinary team.
