Surgical Clinical Reviewer

Join Connecticut Childrens as a Surgical Clinical Reviewer. This role is responsible for collecting and submitting reliable and accurate data to the ACS NSQIP, ensuring high?quality data compilation, documentation and entry into the ACS NSQIP database for all eligible surgeries. The SCR works closely with surgeons and other clinical personnel to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and to apply findings to clinical practice.
Job DescriptionThe SCRs primary responsibility is to collect and submit reliable and accurate data to the ACS NSQIP. This is accomplished through high?quality data compilation, documentation and entry into the ACS NSQIP database of all eligible surgeries for the hospital. The SCR works closely with surgeons and other clinical personnel to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects with populations from neonates through adolescents and helps them be applied to clinical practice.
Responsibilities- Initiate, conduct, and manage the retrospective review and abstraction of quality data.
- Identify surgical patients for inclusion in the NSQIP database through the application of program inclusion/exclusion criteria and protocols.
- Enter data accurately and timely into the NSQIP database and meet the caseload accrual requirement protocol.
- Collect preoperative, operative, and postoperative data components using the hospital medical record system and reporting capabilities.
- Attend weekly Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) conferences to ensure reliable data collection of postoperative occurrences.
- Demonstrate applicability of methodology and reliability of definitions through Inter?Rater Reliability (IRR) testing.
- Utilize software applications for data collection and analysis.
- Review site accrual reports on the database and respond to accrual report alerts.
- Provide periodic data related to surgical clinical pathway metrics and attend Clinical Effectiveness meetings as appropriate.
- Establish effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in the Surgery, Medicine, Nursing, Medical Records, and Information Solutions Departments.
- Contact patients and/or families postoperatively to identify possible occurrences associated with surgical procedures.
- Serve as an educational resource on ACS NSQIP for internal and external audiences by developing educational material and delivering presentations.
- Assist the Childrens Surgical Program Manager (CSPM) as needed for the CSV re?verification process.
- Complete ACS NSQIP Pediatric SCR Training/Certification upon hire and re?certification exam annually.
- Participate in program teleconferences and webinars.
- Attend the ACS Quality Conference annually.
- Education Required: Bachelors degree. Ability to complete all pre?training, on?site training, and post?training modules and pass the training post?test.
- Education Preferred: RN or BSN preferred. Non?Nurses should have an accessible mentor such as RN, BSN, MSN, NP, PA, or MD.
- Experience Required: Minimum one?year experience in a hospital surgery department, surgery clinic, clinical research or medical records. Clinical chart review and abstraction experience required.
- Ability to build relationships and gain alignment for clinical support and articulate questions to receive appropriate support.
- Ability to interact with all members of the surgical team and administrative staff professionally and courteously.
- Computer and internet experience required; familiarity with MS Office (Word, Excel). PowerPoint and Access preferred.
- Database data entry and/or management experience preferred.
- Basic statistical knowledge preferred.
- Licensing and Certification:
- Current Connecticut Registered Nurse licensure preferred.
- Must successfully complete the ACS NSQIP SCR Training/Certification within 3 months.
- Data collection and identification of areas for quality improvement requiring clinical knowledge and understanding of patient care.
- Strong analytical and statistical skills.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal skills, and ability to prioritize workload.
- Computer proficiency in Windows environment (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
- Ability to gather information in a complex hospital system environment.
- Ability to share ACS NSQIP data with relevant groups or meetings (e.g., M&M, infection control, quality management).
- Ability to interact with all levels of management and health care staff and work as a team member across functions.
- Ability to develop and sustain positive working relationships with diverse individuals and groups.
