The Front-End Driver operates front-end trucks that service multiple customers per day, removing and transporting waste or recyclables in fulfillment of customer contracts. The role involves serving various residential and commercial routes, with waste transferred to the appropriate station, landfill, or drop-off location after collection.
Responsibilities- Drive commercial frontload or ancillary equipment along designated routes to mechanically collect solid waste and transport to post-collection facilities
- Open container enclosures or gates to access cans; roll 3-4 yard cans on castors into position for dumping as needed
- Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections; complete and submit a vehicle condition report at the end of the shift
- Interact courteously with customers and the general public along the route; respond to questions or requests and notify supervisor of issues requiring management action
- Maintain cleanliness around the truck and dumping area; clean loose trash off the truck and ground around the truck and container
- Maintain and submit a DOT logbook, daily route/productivity sheet, and vehicle condition report as required by law or company policy
- Back up and maneuver the truck into/out of minimum clearance spaces using mirrors
- Use a key map and GPS to locate service addresses
- Follow safe operating practices, including lockout/tagout procedures, to ensure proper operation of the truck
- Monitor operations to detect loose debris and visually inspect the customer site before and after dumping
- Adhere to all DOT, OSHA, FMCSA, and EPA regulations and standards
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
- High school diploma or GED desired
- Possess valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Minimum one (1) year of commercial driving experience OR CDL school certificate
- Must meet safety-sensitive function criteria according to company standards
- Ability to safely drive the truck and operate the equipment
- Knowledge of the truck and its components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation
- Ability to control operations of equipment and maneuver the truck in tight spaces
- Ability to recognize unacceptable waste (e.g., gasoline or other flammable materials)
- Effective communication with internal and external customers
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend related documents and maps
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Flexibility to adapt to change and a commitment to continuous improvement
- Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds repetitively with proper technique
- Coordination of multiple limbs while sitting or standing
- Ability to follow all company safety policies and procedures
- Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell
- Visual requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focusing ability for vehicle operation
- Ability to lift/move up to 10 pounds regularly, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally
- Sitting may be required up to 75% of the time due to driving
- Ability to work in usually loud conditions
- Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, rain, extreme temperatures, moving parts, vibration, and fumes
- Work in outdoor environments up to 100% of the time
- Work routes away from branch locations and in motor vehicle traffic conditions
- Occasionally work in high precarious places
- Environment is typically loud
