Seasonal Assistant Recreation Program Specialist

Anoka County Parks is seeking a Seasonal Assistant Recreation Program Specialist (Day Camp) to positively impact the quality of life in Anoka County by providing parks, outdoor recreation, and leisure services. This seasonal, non-exempt, on-site position will work at Lake George Regional Park, located at 3100 217th Ave NW, Oak Grove, MN 55011.
Expected work hours are varied, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, up to 32 hours per week. This may include extended hours on weekends and holidays as needed.
The primary responsibilities of this position include:
- Teaching outdoor recreational activities such as kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, and team building to adults, youth, and family groups.
- Planning and delivering day camp activities that align with the program goals and desired outcomes of Wargo Nature Center.
- Assisting programming staff with instructing diverse groups about outdoor recreational and environmental education programs.
- Loading, transporting, and maintaining recreational equipment including canoes, kayaks and trailers, paddles, Personal Flotation Devices (PFD), and paddle boards.
Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities needed include:
- A high school diploma.
- Previous customer service experience.
- A valid driver's license.
- Successfully passing criminal history and driver's license background checks.
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities needed include:
- An associate degree or current enrollment in a post-secondary education program in environmental education, natural resources, environmental studies, parks, and recreation or related program.
- Current lifeguard certification.
- CPR/AED certification.
- Experience in leading environmental education programs.
- Experience in leading canoe/kayak programs.
- Experience in a day camp setting.
Physical demands and work conditions include:
- Indoor and outdoor county worksites in all weather conditions depending on assignment.
- Ability to see colors, shades, and brightness.
- Ability to hear general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds.
- Several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing.
- Physical activity may include repeated bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, prolonged walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment.
- Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties.
- Problem solving, prioritization of tasks, short- and long-term memory, interpreting and understanding written documents, and general mathematical skills.
- Regular lifting of 0-25 lbs., occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs.
- Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, prolonged vibration from machinery, and other hazards is possible while performing essential duties.
- Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle.
- Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
