ABOUT THE ROLE

The Museum Interpretation Division of the High Museum of Art develops audience-focused, accessible, inclusive tools and materials for use by all visitors and docents. These interpretive interventions create pathways for understanding and experiences that embody the organization's mission.

Enacting the Learning and Civic Engagement Department's values and methods, the Coordinator focuses on interpretive planning, narrative development, label writing, development of gallery interactives (analog and digital), gallery teaching, docent training, and visitor tours of the High's collection and special exhibitions.

The successful candidate will develop, write, and test interpretive materials related to the permanent collection and special exhibitions; advocating for visitor experience and helping to expand the quality, quantity, and variety of resources available for broad audiences; and work collaboratively with the Coordinator of Gallery Learning.

Salary: $43,888 annually

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Project Management (35%)
  • Interpretive Coordination: work closely with the Associate Director of Museum Interpretation, curators, exhibitions department, design department, and the digital team to research, develop, and produce interpretative materials (labels, exhibition brochures, tours, audio tours, blog posts, web and social media content, films and videos, in-gallery interactives, etc). related to the High's permanent collections and special exhibitions, to be created and managed with budget and timely exhibition schedule in mind.
  • Build learning opportunities that invite visitors to shift previously held views and expectations through intentional, respectful, and often playful provocation. Ensure in-gallery interpretive work is functional and well-maintained.)
  • Interpretive Strategy: work with the Associate Director of Museum Interpretation to annually conceptualize and strategize the interpretative program for special exhibitions and the permanent collection to ensure that visitors make personal meaning and experience curiosity and wonder.)
Teaching and Learning (35%)
  • Gallery Teaching: give engaging, audience-focused tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions to school children, general visitors, and donors.
  • Docent Training: conceptualize and conduct training for docents on the collections and special exhibitions and provide tour modeling. Demonstrate tour skills, knowledge, and experience that embrace accessible practices and encourage audiences of varying backgrounds, knowledge levels, and learning styles to make relevant connections between art, ideas, and their lived experience.
  • Visitor Research: conduct visitor testing to evaluate interpretive materials. Utilize collaboration, curiosity-driven experimentation, rigorous evaluation, and reflection to create meaningful interpretive experiences.
Interpretive Communication (30%)
  • Interpretive Writing: draft, write, and edit text related to art objects in the permanent collection and special exhibitions. Contribute to documents that describe interpretive strategies for diverse internal stakeholders. (15% of time)
  • Public Conversations: coordinate (alongside the Coordinator, Public Engagement) 9-15 public conversations per year. Suggest themes and questions, develop content such as slides, descriptive text and images, ensure logistics are well-planned and smoothly executed.
  • Other Duties as assigned: attend and assist with Department of Learning and Civic Engagement special events and programs, such as but not limited to, special exhibition events and family days.
WHAT WILL WE EXPECT OF YOU:

  • Proficiency in computer word-processing and Microsoft Office products. Knowledge of TMS and/or Trello a plus
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy

  • Willingness to troubleshoot and problem-solve
  • Experience working within a team setting
  • Ability to assess and evaluate information as to its validity and appropriateness
Education and Experience
  • BA, art history, art education, or other relevant humanities and/or social science degree and two (2) years of professional work experience OR MA/MFA/M.Ed in relevant discipline and one (1) year professional work experience. Experience working as an educator and/or in a museum setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of current research and literature in museum interpretation, museum/visitor studies, and museum education preferred.
Language Skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Strong public speaking skills, with an emphasis on gallery teaching.
  • Ability to organize and express information in clear, logical sequence
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to compute rates and percentages and to present information in report form, prepare and maintain budget and reconcile inventory.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, working on a computer and walking throughout the museum
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds at times
