The Library Assistant assists in the direction of circulation work tasks of library staff. Serves as employee in charge during absence of Director and Youth Librarian. Helps to train new staff and volunteers on library functions and procedures and leads and guides all lower-level staff and volunteers in library operations and meeting goal objectives. Acts as an assistant to the Library Director and Youth Librarian and serves as a volunteer coordinator. Assists with Internal Controls, performs administrative management duties to ensure all internal controls are in place. Assists with technical service operations such as cataloging of materials and administers customer service operations at the circulation desk as required. Organizes, plans, implements, and evaluates library procedures, and processes; recommends improvements to the Director and Youth Librarian in charge. Assists with social media: Works with the Director, Youth Librarian, and clerks to develop and execute marketing and program outreach, using tools such as Canva. Supports all programming initiatives and development, with a focus on creating and implementing adult and senior programming in coordination with the Library Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)
- Provides oversight of circulation desk operations. Oversee and monitor circulation physical space and initiates maintenance or improvements.
- Provides oversight of the meeting, activity, and study rooms.
- Exercises functional supervision over library clerks and acts as a Volunteer Coordinator assisting and providing training to volunteers.
- Trains, monitors, and counsel's library clerks and volunteers.
- Ensures operations, activities, and services are compliant with library and city policies, federal, state, and local regulations.
- Assists professional staff in the implementation of library services and providing administrative support to Librarians.
- Assists patrons in their use of library materials and information sources, use of the library catalog, and by answering routine reference questions.
- Assists members of the public in the use of technology and library equipment.
- Provides guidance to the public in the use of the library including conducting formal or informal tours and introductions to resources and collections.
- Receive, respond, and resolve escalated patron circulation customer experience issues, involving library management as applicable.
- Promotes, delivers, and evaluates library programs with a focus on adult and senior programming.
- Assists with cataloging and processing of materials as needed.
- Attendance is an essential duty of this position.
- Performs other duties and fulfills responsibilities as required by the Library Director.

Qualifications

Required Education and/or Experience
- 2 years of college from an accredited college or university.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
- 1 year of library experience involving circulation, cataloging, reference services, or programming.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Knowledge of fundamental library principles, methods, materials, and practices.
- Knowledge of library public service practices.
- Knowledge of Dewey Decimal classification system, library reference resources and collections.
- Ability to learn and use established library methods.
- Ability to conduct reference interviews.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public to promote positive public relations.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Fluent in reading and speaking English.
- Knowledge of computers and possess an understanding of computer applications and networking.
- Ability and willingness to use Microsoft spreadsheet and word processing applications is required.
- Ability to navigate online resources and databases.
- Ability to use and troubleshoot library software and equipment.
- Ability to type at least 30 WPM.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, co-workers, and supervisors.
- Ability to be responsible for the performance and completion of routine tasks.
- Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
- Ability to be flexible.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee has frequent contact with City employees, customers and citizens. The employee must remain calm and professional in tense, emotionally charged, and stressful situations. The employee may face difficult and stressful situations and may be required to work under time pressures to meet deadlines, to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, to change tasks frequently, to perform tedious and exacting work, and to work closely with others as part of a team. The employee may experience frequent interruptions during the workday. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a part-time position working approximately 5 days per week, 4-5 hours per day. These hours may increase during times when the Library is understaffed or additional coverage is needed. Regular days and hours of work include weekdays, weekends and evenings and may change at any time, with or without notice, to accommodate the needs of the department and the City.
Travel
An employee in this position may be required to drive a vehicle to various meetings, functions, and events, including traveling out of town to represent the City at meetings, conferences and for training.
Pre-Employment Testing
If a conditional offer of employment is received, employment is contingent upon receiving acceptable results from the required pre-employment physical exam, physical performance evaluation and background investigation.
