General Description:
The Accountant I is an entry-level professional accounting position responsible for a range of financial activities, with a primary focus on grant accounting. This position plays a key role in tracking, reconciling, and reporting on grant-related transactions to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and funding requirements. In addition to grant-related duties, the Accountant I will be assigned general accounting tasks to support the broader finance and accounting functions of the organization. Under the general direction of the General Accounting Manager, work is performed independently with guidance and oversight, particularly during complex assignments or critical deadlines. This position is classified as FLSA Exempt and may require occasional work outside of regular business hours, including weekends or holidays, during peak periods such as audits, year-end close, or special projects.
**Starting salary will not exceed 10 percent of the base salary**
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Job Duties:
Representative duties and tasks expected of the Accountant I are listed below. This list does not include marginal tasks that are also performed but are incidental to the primary functions. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
1. Grant and General Accounting Activities
- Prepare, review, and post journal entries for grant and general accounting transactions
- Monitor, reconcile and report on grant revenues and expenditures.
- Ensure that grant fund activity complies with funding agreements, internal policies, and external regulations.
- Maintain organized and accurate documentation for grant transactions and reporting.
- Perform general ledger account reconciliations and transaction reviews as assigned.
2. Reporting and Analysis
- Assist in preparing grant-specific and other financial reports.
- Create audit-ready schedules and documentation for grants and other areas as assigned.
- Support financial analysis and reporting needs for internal and external stakeholders.
3. Compliance and Process Improvement
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and grantor-specific guidelines.
- Participate in process reviews to improve efficiency, automation, and accuracy in financial workflows.
- Support ongoing improvement efforts in grant tracking, reporting systems, and internal controls.
4. General Accounting Support
- Provide supplementary support for various accounting and office functions as needed.
- Perform administrative and customer support tasks such as responding to inquiries and greeting visitors as needed.
- Other related tasks as assigned.
Licensure or Certification Requirements:
May require a driver's license if assigned to transport files among facilities or assigned to a remote office.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, and ABILITIES:
The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent attention to detail and accuracy, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel. Candidates should exhibit the ability to work independently and collaborate effectively both within a team and with external partners. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree, preferably in Accounting or a related field, or 4 years experience in a directly related field.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to resolve routine and non-routine problems in a professional, standardized manner.
