Senior Systems Architect

Located in the Tucson Development Center (TDC). The Senior System Architect will work with the Vice-President of Engineering and the entire Engineering Department to assist in designing, planning and troubleshooting all system development and support work and ensure that such work is consistent with established company policies and strategies and will work closely with senior members of the engineering team to become familiar with all facets of the design of current product as well as be responsible for leading the design of new products. Expectations for this position are for this person to become a trusted expert in many areas of the product suite and will be counted upon to lend their expertise to other members of the team. In addition, this role will provide architectural leadership for major modernization initiatives, including cloud and database platform migrations, ensuring the target solutions are scalable, secure, resilient, and aligned with enterprise standards.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Design system architecture and interface control using defined and approved requirements and then manage and execute product delivery by serving as key technical resource and development team lead.
- Investigate system issues, determine root cause and/or options and then create and execute action plans as needed.
- Multi-task by working independently and/or as lead or part of a team as circumstances dictate to resolve specific issue, investigate options for performance or systemic improvement or create and confirm action plan for technological innovation most effectively.
- Document features, modules, requirements, and risks of projects or task development as needed.
- Design, define, and develop custom modules, features, and package integration from proposal to product.
- Lead, direct, and execute development activities using industry-leading tools.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure that systems support the organization's business requirements and meet the needs of end users.
- Design systems based on user/client needs, cost, and required integration with existing applications, systems, or platforms.
- Function as a resource for others concerning a wide variety of the company's concepts, practices, procedures and technical implementations and products.
- Support senior management and project management as required to ensure that projects are completed on time and stay within budget.
- Define and use quantitative methods for measuring the stability and health of the defined architectures.
- Investigate and stay current in emerging technology and observant of trends in the industry.
- Lead the architectural planning and technical oversight of cloud and database modernization initiatives, including migrations of applications and data platforms to cloud-hosted services where appropriate.
- Contribute to and socialize target-state patterns for cloud-hosted, database-backed applications, including principles for HA/DR, backup/restore, observability, and secure connectivity.
- Review and sign off on technical designs impacted by migration or modernization to ensure alignment with agreed standards for performance, security, integration, and operability.
- Partner with DBAs, DevOps, application teams, QA, and InfoSec to sequence dependencies, manage technical risks, and communicate trade-offs in business terms for major modernization efforts.
- Wide-ranging knowledge of systems and tools, network architectures and infrastructures, LAN/WAN technologies, data management technologies, and business applications.
- Advanced software development skills with emphasis on web (SPA Frameworks, REST API, SOAP, etc.), back-end database and .NET (MVC, Web Forms Core, Thick Client, Signal R, etc.) skill sets desired.
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and multi-tasking skills.
- Ability to lead and manage in a team environment, including leading and motivating staff and contract personnel to achieve departmental goals and complete projects on time and on budget.
- Ability to analyze business needs and translate them into technical solutions.
- Strong ability to balance multiple, competing priorities.
- Professional written and verbal communication and people skills to ensure successful interaction with executive and senior management and staff oversight.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement.
- Experience providing architectural guidance for cloud-hosted, database-backed systems in AWS and/or Azure environments.
- Strong understanding of relational database architecture, SQL, data modeling, and modernization considerations, including PostgreSQL.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross-functional technical initiatives that require coordinated delivery across application, data, and infrastructure teams.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in MIS, Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, Engineering or related field, or equivalent work experience required. Master's degree in related field a plus.
- 7-10 years of experience in a dynamic and growing software design/development environment.
- Proven, successful history of designing, developing and implementing complex data management applications.
- Ability to pass a background investigation and drug screen.
- Proven experience influencing or leading major platform modernization efforts (cloud, data, or application transformations) with measurable outcomes.
- Cloud or architecture certifications (AWS/Azure) are a plus.
