Job Summary: 

This position is a hands-on engineering role responsible for developing custom automation, manufacturing equipment, jigs, fixtures, and test systems that support new product and process development. The Equipment Design Engineer II collaborates closely with R&D product development teams to translate evolving product and process requirements into well designed, reliable, and scalable equipment solutions. 

Daily work may include 3D modeling prototype fixtures, designing mechanical and electrical systems, programming HMIs or control logic, fabricating prototypes, wiring control enclosures, troubleshooting equipment, or coordinating with suppliers to select appropriate components. This role plays a critical part in enabling in-house automation capabilities within R&D.

Attention to detail, strong analytical capabilities, and the ability to work with minimal supervision are essential. 

Responsibilities:  

  • Design and build custom manufacturing and test equipment for product development teams. 

  • Own machine development from concept through deployment, including ideation, prototyping, mechanical/electrical design, assembly, programming, documentation, and installation. 

  • Partner closely with product development teams to deliver solutions aligned with dynamic project needs and timelines. 

  • Troubleshoot and support existing equipment, both onsite and remotely. 

  • Use hand and power tools to create quick prototype fixtures using available materials and components. 

  • Prepare and deliver clear oral and written project updates; participate in technical design discussions. 

  • Provide technical guidance on components, materials, methods, systems, and equipment. 

  • Support teams in developing and executing validation studies for equipment and processes. 

  • Maintain professional relationships with internal stakeholders, external partners, and support staff. 

  • Adhere to company procedures and applicable regulatory requirements. 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline. 

  • 3–5 years of engineering experience (or a master’s degree with 2–3 years). 

  • 1+ years of experience with 3D CAD software. 

  • Strong hands‑on experience designing, building, and testing electromechanical systems (professional or personal). 

  • Programming experience with willingness to learn additional languages as required. 

  • Working knowledge of digital and analog I/O. 

  • Experience managing multiple concurrent engineering projects. 

  • Demonstrated ability to make and justify engineering decisions. 

  • Technical writing proficiency. 

  • Strong verbal and written presentation skills. 

  • Ability to receive and integrate critical technical feedback. 

Preferred Skills, and Knowledge 

  • Bachelor’s degree specifically in mechanical, manufacturing, controls, robotics, mechatronics, or electrical engineering. 

  • SolidWorks® certification; strong proficiency with SolidWorks. 

  • Experience with Product Data Management (PDM) tools. 

  • Experience designing automation equipment (panel layout, component integration, schematic design, safety systems, etc.). 

  • Experience with machine controls, including PLCs, HMIs, PID controllers, and motion systems (linear actuators, stepper motors, etc.). 

  • Experience designing pneumatic systems (solenoid valves, cylinders, actuators, regulators, etc.). 

  • Programming experience with one or more languages: Ladder Logic, Structured Text, C/C++, LabVIEW, VBA, G‑Code. 

  • Experience using rapid prototyping techniques to support iterative design. 

  • Experience with sensing and measurement technologies (thermocouples, photoelectric sensors, vision systems, lasers, etc.). 

  • Hands‑on machining and fabrication experience (mills, lathes, welding, hand/power tools, etc.). 

  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes (machining, injection molding, additive manufacturing, sheet metal, welding, etc.). 

  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment. 

  • Experience developing test equipment and performing equipment validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) in a regulated industry (e.g., medical devices, biotech/pharma, aerospace). 

  • Working knowledge of serial communication protocols (RS232, RS485, CANbus, Modbus RTU). 

  • Working knowledge of Ethernet‑based communication protocols (TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT). 

  • Experience working with documentation control systems. 

  • Technical publications or contributions such as patents or industry awards. 

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit and use hands to manipulate, handle or feel objects, tools, controls and office equipment.  The employee frequently is required to talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel or crouch.

Work Environment:
