Job Summary

Job Summary: Incumbent performs routine ultra sound exams to include general, OB/GYN, cardiology, breast, abdominal, and vascular ultrasounds in an outpatient clinic setting. Member will perform routine tasks according to standard procedures and instructions. Member will assist administratively to other areas as a vital Imaging Services team member.

Essential Functions

Representative Duties: Under direct supervision of the Radiology Director job incumbent:

1. Operates medical ultrasound systems in outpatient clinic setting.

2. Utilizes Radiology Information Systems, PACs, or other image acquisition systems.

3. Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate.

4. Trains/advises health care providers on use of portable and primary ultrasound equipment.

5. Assists interpreting radiologist on differential diagnosis of normal versus abnormal pathology.

6. Advises radiologists of examinations' progress and notifies radiologists of significant images requiring their immediate attention.

7. Maintains ultrasound suites in a clean and sanitary condition, and maintains supplies and reorders when necessary.

8. May be called back to duty under emergent or special need situations.

9. Incumbent is subject to irregular tours of duty when patient care, scheduling and/or patient convenience necessitates coverage outside of normal hours of operation.

10. Advises health care provider staff on radiology technique and appropriateness of exams.

11. Serves as liaison between health care providers, radiologists, and patients.

12. Performs quality control procedures according to department policies.

13. May travel to villages to instruct ultrasound technique to health aides when required.

14. Operates PACs to ensure images reach off-site radiologist via teleradiology.

Other Responsibilities:

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Graduation from an accredited Sonography Program with clinical experience and working under the guidance of a radiologist. Certification with ARDMS or equivalent is highly desired. Member must achieve certification within one year of hire.

2. ARDMS registered in specialties of abdomen and obstetrics/gynecology preferred.

3. Three (3) years of Ultrasound experience is preferred, but will consider a licensed new graduate.

4. Must pass a background check pursuant to Federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines.

2. Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed.

3. Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results.

4. Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the Radiologist or health care team informed.

5. Skill in using tact, diplomacy and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers.

6. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.

Supervision: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Supervision

Physical demands: Position requires long periods of sitting, standing, recurring bending, stooping, crouching, stretching, and reaching. Job incumbent must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds in support of equipment/other. Patients may be required to be lifted bodily from time to time. This position requires the incumbent's physical presence at a clinic (TCC, Hospital, or field) for an average of 8 to 10 hours depending on the circumstance. Overtime will occasionally be required.

Summation

Summation: Incumbent must work as a cooperative and successful member of the radiology team and may travel for training purposes when needed.
