Primary Function:
The Preschool Essential Skills Classroom Nurse (LPN) provides direct and delegated nursing care to preschool students with developmental and physical disabilities in accordance with the Indiana Nurse Practice Act, professional nursing standards, and Lafayette School Corporation policies. Working under the supervision of the GLASS Preschool Nurse (RN), the LPN supports students' health, safety, and well-being to remove health-related barriers to learning and promote optimal participation in the educational environment. The LPN performs prescribed medical procedures, administers medications, manages daily health needs, and assists with activities of daily living within the classroom setting. This position also collaborates closely with teachers, parents, and healthcare professionals to implement and maintain Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs) and Emergency Care Plans (ECPs), while maintaining accurate health documentation and fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.

Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (LPN)
- Current nursing license in Indiana (LPN)
- Current certification in CPR and First Aid
- Passed LSC School Safe Background Check
- Good physical and emotional health
Experience: Preference for those with the following experiences: pediatric nursing; administration of nursing procedures such as tube feedings, suctioning, catheterization, glucometer testing, insulin administration, medication administration; work in schools; work with individuals with developmental disabilities.
Job Description
Nursing activities must be according to: the Nurse Practice Act, the professional Standards of Practice, and school policy. As an LPN, the nurse must work under the supervision of the RN, i.e. GLASS Preschool Nurse.
Reports to:
- GLASS Supervisor of Nursing Services
- Direct Supervisor: GLASS Preschool Nurse- for school health procedures and policies, students' health care plans, training, G.L.A.S.S. policies, employment concerns
Responsibilities
- Promotes health and prevents illness/injuries in the educational environment to facilitate the removal of health-related barriers to learning and to promote an optimal level of wellness for students / staff.
- Provides first aid care for illness and injury for students and staff.
- Performs nursing responsibilities as delegated by GLASS. Common procedures include, tube feedings via pump or gravity, catheterization, seizure management, repositioning, assisting with bathroom needs, medication administration, and assisting with activities of daily living within the essential skills classrooms.
- Contacts parent/guardian or physician of student in case of illness, injury, seizure, etc. (in accord with teacher and GLASS nurse communication guidelines).
- Communicates with parents and as needed about health concerns (in accord with teacher and school nurse communication guidelines).
- Keeps Teacher and GLASS Nurse updated about student health concerns.
- Maintains information for health care record updates (including health care plans and emergency care plans, seizure records, procedure records, nursing notes).
- Helps classroom staff understand health care needs.
- Administers medications and health care procedures according to physician's orders, school policy, and students' Individualized School Health Care Plans.
- Monitors, reports, and recommends changes for safety hazards and sanitary conditions in the classroom environment.
- Provides health counseling for students.
- Assists the GLASS Nurse in the development of the Individualized health Care Plans and Emergency Care plans as needed.
- Assists with care of special needs students in the school as assigned.
- Maintains nursing license, CPR and First Aid certifications.
- Attends training and in-services as assigned.
- Carries out other nursing duties as assigned.
- Rides bus as needed.
