Position Summary
The Ophthalmic Technician supports the ophthalmologist by performing diagnostic tests permitted within the scope of practice, maintaining patient records, and helping ensure efficient clinical operations. This role combines technical skills, patient interaction, and administrative tasks to assist ophthalmologists and enhance patient care.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
• Reviews patient charts to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
• Performs tests as delegated by the ophthalmologist and documents appropriately, including lensometry, refractometry,
applanation tonometry, basic muscle balance testing, pupil assessment, anterior chamber assessment, confrontation visual
fields, and gross external examination.
• Measures and records patients' visual acuity and eye pressure.
• Assists with minor surgical procedures and administers eye medications as directed by the ophthalmologist.
• Prepares examination rooms and ensures all equipment is sterilized and operational.
• Collects patient medical histories and prepares them for the ophthalmologist.
• Educates patients and their caregivers regarding eye care, treatment plans, medication usage, and surgery.
• Manages patient records and ensures accurate data entry into electronic health records.
• Assists in training other ophthalmic team members.
• Assists with patient education as permitted by scope of practice.
• Assists the department with scheduling patient appointments.
• Managing inventory of medical supplies and orders new stock as needed.
• Complies with all practice procedures and protocols, as well as State and Federal regulations.
• Collaborates with other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care for patients.
• Maintains a positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.
• Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal,
state and local standards.
• Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures
Qualifications
Education/Training
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of the Certified Ophthalmic Technician written exam, inclusive of the skills exam.
Licensure/Certification
• Maintains current BLS/Healthcare Provider Certification.
• Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) from the International Joint Commission On Allied Health Personnel In

Experience
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in ophthalmology is required; additional experience may be required in certain departments.
