Crating Specialist/Inventory Control

Purpose of the Role: The Crating Specialist is responsible for designing, building, and preparing custom crates and packaging solutions to protect materials, products, or equipment during shipping and storage. This role ensures that all items are securely packaged according to company standards, customer requirements, and transportation regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Crate Construction & Packaging
- Build custom wooden crates, pallets, and skids based on product dimensions, weight, and fragility.
- Measure, cut, and assemble lumber and other materials using hand and power tools.
- Select and apply proper packing materials such as foam, blocking, bracing, strapping, and cushioning.
- Ensure all items are secured, protected, and stabilized within crates to prevent damage.
- Safely handle, lift, and position items of various sizes and weights.
- Inspect items before crating to identify special handling or protection needs.
- Collaborate with shipping/receiving teams to coordinate crate staging and product flow.
- Follow company standards, engineering drawings, or customer specifications for crate design.
- Ensure compliance with packaging and safety regulations (e.g., ISPM-15 for international shipping).
- Conduct quality checks on completed crates to ensure durability and stability.
- Operate saws, nail guns, drills, strapping tools, forklifts, and other warehouse equipment.
- Maintain tools and equipment in safe working condition.
- Report damaged or unsafe tools immediately.
- Accurately label crates and complete required documentation or shipping tags.
- Track packing materials usage and report low inventory levels.
- Work with production and logistics to meet shipping schedules and deadlines.
- Follow all safety procedures when using tools, equipment, and handling materials.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area.
- Participate in safety training and report hazards or near-miss incidents.
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Experience in crating, carpentry, woodworking, or construction (1-2 years preferred).
- Ability to read tape measures, drawings, blueprints, or diagrams.
- Skilled in using hand and power tools.
- Forklift certification will be required.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and perform physically demanding work.
- Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship.
- Epicor ERP systems knowledge highly desirable
