Kennedy Space Center, FL, United States Jacobs Full time

We are launching people to the Moon and Mars. If you want to be part of this amazing mission and enjoy working in a great team environment, we would love to have you as part of our team that is making history, today. It takes big ideas and determination to take NASA's vision and make it reality. That's what we do every day.

The Consolidated Operations Maintenance Engineering and Test (COMET) contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.

The Safety Engineer supports safety operations for the Consolidated Operations Management Engineering and Test (COMET) Contract at Kennedy Space Center. This role performs safety and health assessments across programs, ground support equipment, facilities, and operational activities, and supports hazardous operations involving cryogenic, hypergolic, explosive, high-pressure, toxic, working-at-heights, and asphyxiant hazards. Depending on experience level, the Safety Engineer may perform routine safety tasks under close supervision or carry out more advanced responsibilities independently or alongside senior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and apply federal, NASA, and SOD safety requirements to COMET operations; assist with or develop compliant procedures.

  • Conduct daily safety surveillance inspections of processing areas and record behavior-based safety observations in SETS.

  •  Perform risk assessments (GORA/CAA/JSA/IHR), recommend hazard controls, and prepare related hazard analyses and reports.

  •  Review and approve Work Authorization Documents (WADs), including routine hazardous WADs and alterations.

  •  Investigate safety concerns and assist or lead with incident investigations;  provide technical guidance to resolve compliance issues raised by stakeholders, NASA, or regulatory agencies.

  • Provide oversight to ensure compliance with safety, health, environmental, and company requirements.

  • Collaborate with customers to address safety, health, and environmental issues. Execute safety steps outlined in WADs.

  • Perform safety program assessments using established checklists and processes.

  • Assist in coordinating and managing safety programs, processes, and inventory of safety supplies and stock.

  •  Obtain and maintain required certifications and complete assigned OJT packages.  Provide safety briefings to subcontractors and observe/evaluate worksite safety practices.

  •   Inspect and audit facilities, machinery, and operational processes.

  • Work with senior engineers to develop reference documentation, safety analyses, and detailed reports.

  •  Demonstrate working knowledge of NASA, OSHA, NFPA, and ANSI standards and their application to operations.

  • Demonstrate growing independence in performing routine to moderately complex safety tasks with mentorship and guidance.

  •  Other duties as assigned.
