Job Summary

Our R&D client is seeking a full-time Anatomic Pathology Technician to perform necropsy procedures on small and large animals, prepare tissues for histopathology, and generate data for a variety of studies. This role requires occasional overtime, weekend, holiday, and on-call work.

Major Responsibilities

Technical Responsibilities
  • Perform necropsy examinations of small and large laboratory animals, including gross necropsy, tissue collection, fixation, and specimen labeling.
  • Handle highly hazardous biological/toxic materials in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories.
  • Process tissues for histopathology following SOPs; cross-train in histology (embedding, sectioning, staining) to support workflow coverage.
  • Support development and validation of equipment and necropsy procedures.
  • Perform dilutions and related mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Decontaminate equipment and materials according to safety protocols.
Laboratory & Equipment Responsibilities
  • Serve as the technical point of contact in the lab.
  • Maintain lab cleanliness and proper upkeep of equipment.
  • Manage inventory, order supplies, and handle receipt of materials.
  • Perform waste management and operate autoclaves; prepare decontamination solutions.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including routine calibration and logbook documentation.
  • Use electronic databases for sample tracking and necropsy documentation.
  • Perform basic data manipulation and reporting in spreadsheet software.
  • Set up, validate, and operate laboratory equipment and software as required.
Documentation, Compliance & Safety
  • Follow SOPs, protocols, and facility guidelines.
  • Record data and conduct quality control reviews in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
  • Prepare, maintain, and submit study files and forms per SOPs, quality requirements, and client specifications.
  • Identify deviations from standard practices and prepare reports as needed.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety requirements and respond appropriately to alarms and emergency situations.
Leadership & Teamwork
  • Train and mentor less experienced staff on specific tasks.
  • Serve as a technical co-lead on portions of studies.
  • Work independently while contributing effectively to a team environment.
Analysis & Functional Responsibilities
  • Perform semi-routine assignments, recognize deviations from standard practices, and maintain technical accuracy.
  • Conduct both standard and non-standard tasks under supervision, keeping management informed of progress.
  • Verify the accuracy, applicability, and reasonableness of project work and recommend improvements as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Animal Science, Zoology, or related biological field plus 1 year of relevant experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain:
  • Biological Suitability Assessment Program (BSAP) certification
  • Department of Justice (DoJ) Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval
  • CDC approval to work with BSAT material
  • Willingness to work in BSL-2 and BSL-3 environments with appropriate respiratory protection.
  • Willingness to receive FDA-licensed and investigational vaccines for occupational exposure.
  • Participation in random drug screening.
  • Ability to respond to alarms and emergency situations.
  • Medically fit to perform lab duties and wear required respiratory equipment.
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays, and commute between multiple locations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in pathology or clinical pathology laboratories.
