BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, coordinates the assignment and training of the Vehicle Maintenance Facility personnel; assists in the administration of contracted equipment repairs; and coordinates the necessary maintenance and upgrade of the compressed natural gas refueling station.

Examples of Duties
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

1. Coordinate and oversee of the District Transportation Department vehicle maintenance facilities operations. E

2. Provide technical support and coordination of daily work within the maintenance facilities; direct the work of others. E

3. Assist in the administration of contracted equipment repairs. E

4. Assist in researching and implementing new buses, vehicles, and support equipment. E

5. Interact on a professional level with various departments within the District and school site personnel. E

6. Research options and assemble quotes for pricing and vendors for equipment and services. E

7. Monitor inventory levels of parts and supplies; assist in ordering parts and supplies as appropriate; pick up parts from vendors as needed. E

8. Operate computerized and specialized equipment in the testing, diagnosis, and repair of District vehicles; operate a computer and assigned software, including computerized on-board systems and electronics, to compile and evaluate information used in the diagnosis of system malfunctions. E

9. Perform skilled mechanical work in the inspection, advanced diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of school buses and a variety of large and small diesel, gas, and alternative fueled District vehicles and equipment; perform vehicle and equipment inspections and preventive maintenance according to established guidelines and procedures. E

10. Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicle electrical systems; such as lighting, wiring, fuel, air conditioning, lubricating, emission, hydraulic, and cooling systems as assigned. E

11. Diagnose, repair, or replace vehicle transmissions; repair, adjust, or replace various components such as fuel systems, hydraulic cylinders, valve controls, generators, ignition systems, bearings, drive trains, and gears. E

12. Oversee scheduled preventative maintenance inspections; assure compliance with California Highway Patrol school bus maintenance regulations and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. E

13. Operate a variety of equipment, such as hand and power tools, lifts, jacks, stands, tire machines, testers, meters, and diagnostic equipment necessary to perform assigned duties. E

14. Utilize schematics, rough sketches, and technical manuals to assure proper inspection, maintenance, and repair of District vehicles and equipment. E

15. Oversee required Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuel system and cylinder inspections. E

16. Perform advanced welding to design, fabricate, modify, and install various vehicle components. E

17. Perform emissions testing on District vehicles. E

18. Prepare and maintain a variety of written or electronic logs and records, such as maintenance activities, repairs, and assigned activities. E

19. Communicate with District personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities, and resolve issues or concerns related to vehicle maintenance and assigned activities. E

20. Maintain tools, equipment, machinery, and work area for District vehicles in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. E

21. Operate a fork-lift for the moving of parts, equipment, or supplies. E

22. Respond to emergency repair needs as requested. E

23. Operate vehicles and equipment for recovery, repair, and testing operations. E

24. Drive a vehicle to conduct work. E

25. Participate in ongoing trainings and staff development.

26. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school (or equivalent) and four years of journey-level experience in vehicle maintenance and repair work involving the use of computerized and specialized diagnostic equipment, including one year of lead or supervisory responsibilities.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Incumbents must have an acceptable driving record and must qualify for insurability by the District's insurance carrier.

The following licenses or other requirements must be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment:
Valid California Class B or Class A commercial driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements.
US Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate.

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in Master Automotive Technician, Master Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Technician, or Master School Bus Technician is required.

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in Alternative Fuels Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Technician, and Natural Gas Fueling Station Operation and Maintenance Certification is required.

NOTE: This classification has been identified as a safety-sensitive job class based on the guidelines of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Employees in this job class are subject to random selection for alcohol or controlled substance testing.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Vehicle Maintenance Coordinator - The Vehicle Maintenance Coordinator supports the supervisor by acting as a lead in the department, training, and providing work direction to staff.

Vehicle Maintenance Technician III - The Vehicle Maintenance Technician III is the advanced journeyman level class in the Vehicle Maintenance Technician series. Employees perform the most difficult or complex diagnostics and responsibilities assigned to classes within the Vehicle Maintenance Technician series.

In accordance with Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations of Classified Service # 70.200.1, new employees to Poway Unified School District will be placed at Step 1 of the official salary range designated for the position. Any variances in initial placement are addressed in, and shall be carried out in agreement with, this rule.

Effective July 1, 2020, all new employees to Poway Unified School District will be responsible for the fingerprint fee associated with new employee processing at the cost of $74 - cash/check ($76 for credit cards).
