Your Role:

As a Senior Engineer, you will be at the forefront of designing, implementing, and maintaining systems that empower millions of users and facilitate the trading of billions of dollars worth of assets. You will lead regional recruitment initiatives, mentor other engineers in our principles and practices, and foster Alpaca’s culture within your team. In this capacity, you will also oversee operational reliability and act as the incident commander during regional business hours to ensure seamless stability.

We seek a dedicated full-stack engineer with a proven track record in designing and developing scalable applications, willing to innovate and challenge existing conventions. You'll have the autonomy to architect solutions aligned with our strategic objectives and actively engage in the goal-setting process alongside a collaborative team.

Things You Get To Do:

• Design a scalable and mission-critical brokerage system.
• Develop and enhance middle and back-office systems, including gRPC microservices and React-based UIs for internal administration and API development.
• Collaborate closely with Alpaca's core teams to enhance the framework for diverse languages, currencies, and markets.
• Engage with tech leads globally, utilizing Slack and periodic meetings outside regular hours to ensure alignment.
• Troubleshoot incidents and bugs, maintaining system integrity and performance.
• Navigate regulatory requirements while building scalable solutions for Alpaca’s international growth.
• Participate in on-call support for timely engineering projects.

Who You Are (Must-Haves):

• Extensive experience designing and developing complex financial systems, ideally with double-entry accounting.
• Strong grasp of accounting principles, ledger structures, and transaction reconciliation.
• Experience in building scalable financial applications managing multi-currency transactions.
• Familiarity with regulatory compliance in financial markets.
• Proficient in Go or similar backend languages, with expertise in robust system architecture design.
• Hands-on experience with financial APIs, market data integrations, and trade settlement processes.
• Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with global teams and stakeholders.
• Solid understanding of computer science fundamentals and software engineering principles.
• Ability to work independently in a fully remote, globally distributed team under a fast-paced environment.
• Strategic thinker capable of translating technical concepts into business strategies.
• Experience with domain-driven and event-driven design.
• Strong problem-solving skills paired with a proactive attitude.
• Capability to lead incident responses and troubleshoot issues authoritatively.
