Remote - Data Center Architect / Principal Infrastructure Engineer

About the Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Data Center Architect to lead strategic infrastructure initiatives, including re-architecture, modernization, and migration planning for enterprise-scale environments. This role requires a consultative mindset, deep technical expertise, and the ability to advise stakeholders on best practices while delivering robust, scalable, and resilient solutions. Ideal candidates will have a professional services background and excel at balancing technical depth with business objectives.
This team owns and manages all on-premises infrastructure, including hardware, virtualization layer, and operating systems, ensuring everything below the OS layer functions optimally. Responsibilities include configuration management, lifecycle oversight, and operational health of $67 million in infrastructure assets. Cloud environments are managed by other teams, but this role ensures seamless integration and readiness for hybrid architectures.
Key Responsibilities
• Infrastructure Assessment & Strategy
• Evaluate existing data center environments, identify technical debt, and assess operational risks.
• Develop comprehensive migration roadmaps that prioritize scalability, resiliency, and cost efficiency.
• Architecture & Design
• Design next-generation infrastructure leveraging Cisco UCS/HX, Nutanix HCI, VMware vSphere/vSAN, and emerging technologies.
• Define standards for power, cooling, physical security, and hardware lifecycle management.
• Modernization & Automation
• Drive automation initiatives using Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, and scripting languages (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
• Integrate disaster recovery, hybrid cloud enablement, and containerization strategies (Docker/Kubernetes).
• Technical Leadership & Advisory
• Act as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and project teams, providing architectural guidance and risk mitigation strategies.
• Mentor engineering teams on best practices for infrastructure design and operations.
• Lifecycle Management
• Oversee the entire lifecycle of $67M in infrastructure assets, from procurement to decommissioning.
• Ensure compliance with ITIL frameworks, security standards, and operational SLAs.
• Documentation & Governance
• Create architecture diagrams, SOPs, and migration playbooks.

• Proven ability to lead complex re-architecture projects from assessment through execution.
• Comfortable engaging with C-level stakeholders and translating technical concepts into business outcomes.

Required Skills & Experience
• 10+ years in data center architecture or infrastructure engineering roles.
• Expertise in Cisco UCS/HX, Nutanix HCI, VMware vSphere/vSAN, and storage platforms.
• Strong knowledge of Linux (RHEL, Ubuntu) and Windows Server administration.
• Proficiency in automation tools (Terraform, Ansible, Puppet) and scripting (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
• Deep understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, firewalls).
Experience designing migration strategies for large-scale environments.
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field.
• Certifications: VCP, CCNP, Nutanix NCP, AWS/Azure Architect.
• Familiarity with monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, SolarWinds).
Exposure to hybrid cloud architectures and container orchestration.
