Job Description:

Clinical Programs are the main vehicle to establish and implement clinical best practices within Intermountain Health, measure and demonstrate their patient success, and share these results with the larger community. The Senior Medical Director will lead these efforts for the system working collaboratively in a dyad leadership structure to define, establish, and oversee the work of the Clinical Program. The Senior Medical Director works collaboratively with all regions and disciplines including ambulatory-based care, acute care, medical group, clinical shared services, and the clinically integrated networks. The Senior Medical Director provides leadership, oversight, and support for the development of a culture of high reliability and the measurement of care, identifying opportunities, building relationships, and executing on strategies to drive the performance and measured improvement of the clinical program.

Scope

The Senior Medical Director is a system-wide leadership role reporting to the Physician Leader of the Healthcare Delivery Institute with accountability for the Clinical Program. Clinical Programs are reporting to the Healthcare Delivery Institute to share resources, enhance process and outcome tracking, and improve clinical implementations. The Senior Medical Director operates in a dyad leadership structure with key organizational relationships across Intermountain Health and has a specific focus on leading the performance, continuous improvement, and strategic direction of the clinical program across the system, as well as collaborating with region Service Line medical leadership in the relevant specialties. The Senior Medical Director aligns with the enterprise clinical governance structures by formulating objectives and priorities, and developing and supporting the implementation of shared goals and plans in support of Intermountain's mission and long-term interests. The clinical program will oversee the convening of discipline experts across the system to define clinical best practices, develop care process models including clinical models of the future/value-based models, supporting clinical Best Practice Integration (cBPI), identifying, and defining important clinical and value performance KPIs, provide content expertise for clinical questions and provide specialty support for P&T and supply chain.

Job Essentials

The Senior Medical Director is the model clinical leader for the model healthcare system as evidenced by integrity, passion, and energy; being a champion of Intermountain's mission, vision, and values; effective implementation of Intermountain's operating model; strong executive presence; and professional presentations, proposals and business plans.

Clinical Best Practices : Leads Physician and Advanced Practice Provider councils from the relevant specialties to define best practices to be spread across the system. Ensures that evidence-based clinical care standards are established and effectively implemented across the system for appropriate caregivers in partnership with the region leadership. Builds and fosters alignment with best practice across the system including the standardization of clinical content for the single EMR.

Clinical Best Practice Integration (cBPI): Lead and manage the system cBPI pipeline with regards to the relevant specialties within the Clinical Program. Be the expert on clinical implementation within the relevant specialties. Partner with the HDI team of implementation experts including quality improvement experts, applied health services researchers/implementation scientists, and biomedical informaticists to manage each aspect of the pipeline. Lead on clinical implementations to reduce unnecessary variation, drive high adherence to best clinical practices and demonstrate the improvement in outcomes for the patient, processes of care, and service. Partner with region leadership on effective implementations, including defining, tracking, improving and sustaining clinical KPIs.

Clinical models of the future/value-based models: Leads development of care processes to support value and risk-based payment models, including value KPIs for the system, in partnership with the regions. Partners with teams to demonstrate the financial impact of the system clinical best practices, in both ambulatory and acute settings, for the relevant specialties in the Clinical Program.

Strategy Deployment: Participates in the strategic planning and goal setting processes focusing on best practices sharing for the portfolio's specialties in the clinical program, ensuring that relevant annual goals and key performance metrics are established. Promotes clinical best practices goal achievement and maintains goals set by the organization. Supports and drives results for associated key quality, experience, cost, and utilization metrics.

Context Expertise: Serve as a clinical expert for the system. Effectively communicates on a national and international level regarding the work and successes of the clinical program.

Minimum Qualifications

M.D. or D.O. Education must be obtained through an ACGME or AOA accredited institution and will be verified.

ABMS or equivalent AOA Board Certification

Active Medical Licensure, or in process of obtaining licensure.

Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.

Three years of clinical experience in an applicable medical subspecialty practice setting.

Three years of experience leading successful improvement in clinical settings.

Experience with change management with the ability to provide leadership in the adaptation and implementation of new processes or technology that enhance safety.

Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Three years of progressive healthcare leadership experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Public Health or other business-related field.

Trained in improvement science (i.e., Six Sigma, Lean, Project management, Intermountain's Advanced Training Program).

Experience working in a complex health system (hospitals, ambulatory clinics, post-acute care, etc.).

Demonstrated leadership of clinicians.

Certified in healthcare communication, coaching, or an equivalent experience with external entities that drive and support Experience of Care approaches and standards, including government agencies, academic institutions, universities and related organizations of higher education, and other public institutions.

Physical Requirements:

· Interact with others requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.

· Operate computers, telephones, office equipment, and manipulate paper requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.

· See and read computer monitors and documents.

· Remain sitting or standing for long periods of time to perform work on a computer, telephone, or other equipment.
