The Emma L. Bowen Community Service Center is seeking an Occupational Therapist to join our team. This position is a terrific opportunity for someone to gain additional experience and make a difference in the lives of our clients.

For over 45 forty-five years, our organization has provided mental health and holistic services in northern Manhattan for families, children, adolescents, and other adults including the elderly in a supportive and caring environment. We also have an outpatient and residential substance abuse program as well as a Therapeutic Preschool for 3-5-year-olds.

Upper Manhattan Mental Health Center is a Certified National Health Service Corps (NHSC) site.

Job Description:

  • Responsible for carrying out the Occupational Therapy goals on the student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  • Therapist is responsible for assessing and treating students with disabilities, maintaining daily session notes and attendance records, writing progress reports, attending IEP meetings, recommending adaptive equipment, environmental accommodations, or assistive technology.
  • In addition to these services provided to students on their caseloads, occupational therapists work collaboratively with teachers, other school staff and parents/guardians to serve the school community in a variety of ways.
  • These include:
  • Consultation with teachers to offer classroom-based strategies
  • Observations/push in support in classroom or other school environments
  • Attending meetings that support student programming (e.g., school meetings, parent meetings)
  • Activities that support students in the natural environment or general education curriculum (e.g., social skills activities, classroom exercise routine, functional sensory motor activities, handwriting program)
  • Drafting sensory diets to be implemented by school staff and at home
  • Staff in-service and professional development (e.g., in-service to teachers on developing fine motor centers, transfer training for paraprofessionals)
  • Aiding in environmental modifications, and adaptive equipment or devices
  • Recommending appropriate positioning so students can access instruction
  • Linking parents/guardians to appropriate community-based resources
  • Designing home exercise programs and related activities for carryover
  • Supporting school compliance and data tracking.
Requirements
  • Occupational Therapy Experience: 1 year (Pediatric experience preferred)
  • Master's Required
  • NYS licensed OT
