Job Summary
The Department
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) serves students under the direction of Student Success Programs at Purdue University. The DRC works with students who seek accommodations for a disability to ensure they can participate fully in the academic environment at Purdue.
The Role
The Scribe is a student position that works in close partnership with a full-time DRC staff member who meets with students. The Scribe will create accurate, usable transcription documents of specified information from student meetings, using audio recordings and other materials to generate the transcript. The Scribe will also enter data about students from these meetings into our case management system, Accessible Information Management (AIM).
Job Responsibilities
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
In their day-to-day workflow, the Scribe will:
- Access employee resources shared with him/her/them (e.g., handwritten notes, rough transcripts, audio recordings, etc.) of meeting outcomes.
- Open or download these resources, accurately transcribe the spoken content into a word processing document, and return the completed document, proofed and edited for accuracy.
- Enter data (e.g., date of student appointment) into the case management system.
- Typing transcripts with accurate grammar, spelling, and vocabulary is essential.
- Entering information into a computer system with precision is highly important.
- The Scribe must sign a confidentiality agreement and maintain strict confidentiality regarding student cases and DRC-related work.
- Other duties include organizing electronic files and effectively communicating with DRC staff.
Hours/Schedule
- Nonexempt, part-time status.
- The work schedule will be negotiated with the position's supervisor and will be flexible to accommodate both the department's and student's needs.
- The specific work schedule will be discussed during the interview process and can be adjusted to accommodate the student's academic commitments.
- In-person, with negotiable work hours to meet the department's and employee's needs.
- The Scribe will report to the Assistant Director of the DRC and work closely with an Access Consultant.
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time and use a computer for transcription tasks.
- Occasional lifting of office supplies or materials (e.g., files, folders) up to 10 lbs.
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency with word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word).
- Ability to accurately transcribe spoken words into written form.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy in transcription.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow FERPA guidelines.
- Experience with transcription or audio processing software (e.g., Otter.ai, Descript).
- Previous experience in an office or academic setting is a plus.
- Knowledge of disabilities and accommodations in higher education (helpful but not required).
