Job Summary

Chicago State University (CSU), Illinois' only four-year U.S. Department of Education-designated Predominantly Black Institution (PBI), seeks an innovative, equity-minded, and visionary Associate Provost of Student Affairs and Academic Success to lead an integrated portfolio focused on holistic student success-academic, social, and personal.

Reporting directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, the Associate Provost provides executive oversight for university-wide initiatives that bridge academic affairs and student affairs to advance student engagement, retention, persistence, graduation and post-graduate success.

This role unites two critical functions-Student Affairs (wellbeing, engagement, and inclusion) and Academic Success (academic support, advising, and completion initiatives)-to create a cohesive, student-centered ecosystem that ensures every CSU student thrives academically and personally.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Integration

  • Provide visionary leadership in designing and implementing a comprehensive student success and student affairs strategy aligned with CSU's 2025-2030 Strategic Plan and mission as a Predominantly Black Institution.
  • Serve as a senior advisor to the Provost on all matters related to student development, academic persistence, engagement and pre-and post-graduate success.
  • Lead cross-divisional collaboration between Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, Financial Aid, Institutional Research, and Student Services to support retention, internship placement, graduation and post-graduation goals.
  • Develop, implement, and assess policies and programs that remove barriers to student success and promote equity and belonging.
  • Develop, implement, and assess policies and programs related to transfer students and pathways for degree completion.
Student Success & Academic Support
  • With the support of the Associate Dean of Students, The Associate Provost will oversee Academic Advising, Retention and Student Success, Learning Assistance Center, RISE Academy, Sophomore Academy, CUBS, Dual Enrollment, Transfer Pathways, Career Development Center, the Cougar Completion Campaign, African American Male Success Center, and the Latino Resources and Success Center.
  • Champion data-driven, data-informed approaches to increase persistence and degree completion, particularly for first-generation, Pell-eligible, and underrepresented students.
  • Lead New Student Orientation and transition programs in partnership with Enrollment Management and the Associate Dean of Students.
  • Direct institutional scholarship and grant-funded initiatives supporting academic persistence (e.g., PELL55, Hope Scholars, ComEd Scholars).
Student Affairs & Engagement
  • Provide strategic oversight and innovation to student affairs and the Associate Dean of Students who has responsibility related to the following: Housing and Residence Life, Student Engagement (Student Government, Greek Life, and campus events), and Counseling and Wellness.
  • Ensure a safe, inclusive, and engaging campus environment that supports student wellbeing, leadership, and sense of belonging.
  • Oversee the Cougar Food Pantry, community partnerships, and crisis response protocols.
  • Supervise the Student Conduct and Judicial Affairs processes, ensuring compliance with Title IX, Clery Act, and related federal regulations.
Assessment, Accreditation & Planning
  • Lead and coordinate co-curricular assessment initiatives for HLC accreditation and institutional effectiveness.
  • Chair or co-chair key university committees such as the Student Success Task Force and Student Affairs Leadership Council.
  • Use institutional data (Banner, Argos, DegreeWorks, Navigate360) to inform decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Prepare and present reports to the Provost, Board of Trustees, and external partners on student outcomes and strategic progress.
Staff Development & Fiscal Management
  • Oversee and mentor the Associate Dean of Students, directors and senior staff across both student affairs and academic success units.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Manage divisional budgets and ensure alignment with institutional priorities and compliance requirements.
  • Pursue external funding opportunities to strengthen and expand student success programs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) required in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive leadership experience in student affairs, academic success, or a related area within higher education.
  • Demonstrated record of advancing student retention, persistence, graduation and post-graduation success through evidence-based strategies.
  • Experience supervising senior-level staff and leading cross-functional teams.
  • Strong understanding of issues impacting underrepresented, first-generation, and adult learners.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex budgets and securing external grants.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working at a Minority-Serving Institution or Predominantly Black Institution.
  • Proven success leading institutional accreditation or co-curricular assessment initiatives (HLC preferred).
  • Proficiency with enterprise systems such as Banner, Navigate360, Argos, DegreeWorks, and learning management systems (Moodle or similar).
  • Ability to inspire and foster innovation and lead through change and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
