Position Details:

  • Role: General Surgery Advanced Practice Provider, PRN Days
  • Shift: 10 or 12-hour shifts, 1 shift per week required + coverage for full-time APP during vacations (weekends or holidays may be included); possibility of 2 shifts per week if willing to train in general surgery
  • Credentialing: Approximately 2-3 months
  • Patient Load: Primary responsibilities include new consultations and post-follow-ups with 10-15 patients per day
  • Background: Med/Surg or Surgical Nursing & APP experience required
  • Compensation: $70/hour, eligible for shift differentials ($3.90/hr for evenings, $3/hr for weekends)
  • Qualifications: AGACNP required (FNP not considered); PA applicants welcome

As a position focused on providing comprehensive patient care, you will be responsible for systemic assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, and in-hospital follow-up in accordance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act and MHHS Standards of Care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Graduate of an approved Nurse Practitioner Program in Texas; Master's of Nursing preferred
    • Graduate of an approved Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program in Texas if specializing in Trauma; Master's of Nursing preferred
  • Licenses/Certifications:
    • Current State of Texas license to practice professional nursing
    • Certification from the American Nurse Credentialing Center or equivalent in specialty area
    • Basic Life Support certification
    • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
    • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification if specializing in Trauma (to be obtained within 6 months of hire)
  • Experience/Knowledge/Skills:
    • At least 2 years of clinical nursing experience in the relevant area

Principal Accountabilities

  • Assess and manage patient/family needs across the disease process as part of an interdisciplinary team, in collaboration with attending physicians in accordance with hospital policies and clinical guidelines.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments including medical history and physical examinations; review and interpret diagnostic tests.
  • Formulate and manage patient treatment plans, performing key interventions such as arterial and central line placements, intubations, and more.
  • Collaborate in developing and evaluating care protocols; actively engage in research, education, and practice improvement initiatives.
  • Utilize effective communication skills to educate patients and families about their care and available resources.
  • Ensure adherence to all safety standards and hospital policies; support successful departmental goals and objectives.
  • Commit to personal and professional growth by maintaining qualifications for continuing education and skill competency.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to high-quality patient experiences by upholding Memorial Hermann's service standards.
