Olympia, WA, United States Clinical Management Consultants Full time

The Payroll Director opportunity offers the chance to lead a mission-driven payroll function that keeps caregivers focused on patient care while ensuring every paycheck is accurate, timely, and compliant. Payroll Director is ideal for a seasoned payroll leader who thrives on building high-performing teams, elevating processes, and delivering exceptional service across a complex healthcare environment.

The hospital served by the Payroll Director is a Joint Commission-accredited, publicly governed healthcare system with an employed medical group and outpatient clinics, delivering acute, emergency, and primary care services to a diverse community. Payroll Director supports a unionized, public hospital district structure with strong community ties and a culture of accountability and collaboration. The organization emphasizes quality, safety, and continuous improvement across all departments where the Payroll Director will be a key administrative partner.

The Payroll Director reports to the Executive Director of Human Resources and leads a team of payroll professionals responsible for full-cycle processing and customer support. Payroll Director partners closely with Human Resources, Accounting/Finance, Benefits, IT, and leaders across clinical and non-clinical departments; this role also coordinates with Medical Group leadership and processes compensation for District Commissioners. The Payroll Director provides guidance to leadership on payroll policy, labor contract interpretation, and compliance matters while mentoring staff and collaborating with stakeholders to meet deadlines and audit requirements.

The Payroll Director oversees a multi-entity payroll operation supporting the hospital, medical group, and district commissioners within a 24/7 healthcare setting, including union and non-union employee populations. Payroll Director leads daily operations spanning timekeeping, earnings and deductions, benefits integration, and post-payroll reporting, leveraging enterprise HRIS/ERP and timekeeping platforms to drive accuracy and efficiency. The environment is professional, collaborative, and service-oriented, with the Payroll Director engaging closely with HR, Benefits, and Finance to ensure seamless employee experiences.

The Payroll Director directs all payroll activities, including end-to-end processing, audits, reconciliations, multi-state tax filings, garnishments, and year-end W-2/ACA reporting; the role ensures strict adherence to federal and state regulations, hospital policies, and all union contracts. Payroll Director develops staff through coaching, training, and performance management, while leading policy updates, process improvement, and system enhancements to elevate accuracy, timeliness, and transparency. The Payroll Director partners with HR and Accounting on benefit plan administration and GL integrations, provides data for financial reporting, and serves as a key resource during regulatory and financial audits. Qualifications that align well with this role include a Bachelor's in Business or Accounting (or equivalent experience), CPP/FPC credentials, prior healthcare payroll leadership, experience in a public, unionized environment, 3-5+ years of payroll experience, exceptional confidentiality, and strong written and verbal communication skills.

Payroll Director benefits from an affordable cost of living relative to larger metros, family-friendly neighborhoods, and a steadily growing local economy anchored by healthcare, education, and small business. Cultural events, farmers markets, and nearby day-trip destinations provide ample variety, while the pace of life supports meaningful work-life balance for a Payroll Director seeking both career growth and outdoor adventure.

Competitive Compensation and Generous Benefits are offered for the Payroll Director, with the opportunity to shape a high-impact function that supports every caregiver and department. Payroll Director will see the direct impact of leadership in accurate pay, employee trust, and organizational stability-making a measurable difference for the community served.
