Description:
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs laboratory testing using both manual and automated techniques.
The scientist performs other duties as assigned.
The primary responsibility is to understand and adhere to performance standards, policies, and behaviors.
Responsibilities include following the laboratory's pre-analytic and analytic procedures and maintaining records of these tests.
Maintaining records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens is essential.
Adherence to quality assurance procedures is required, including documenting all quality control activities, testing, and calibrations.
Instrument and equipment verifications must be maintained along with preventative maintenance.
Following the laboratory's policies and procedures is mandatory whenever test systems are not within established performance specifications.
It is important to identify and document problems that may adversely affect test performance.
Notification and documentation of clinicians and patient units regarding all critical values is required, as well as maintaining the laboratory's STAT turnaround time requirements.
Participation in regulatory readiness for inspections is expected.
Maintaining 12 Continuing Education credits per year is required.
Participation in standard operating procedures, proficiency testing, audits, and quality programs, including reporting non-conformances, is essential.
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist evaluates test results for abnormalities and confirms those results as per department protocols.
Participation in validations, training, and competency assessments is required.
Responsible for inventory management, including lot numbers, expiration dates, labeling, and quality control requirements is a key duty.
Completion of all annual mandatory training, in-services, and ongoing education is essential.
Other duties may be assigned.
Section testing training and competency assessments are maintained by the section laboratory supervisor for all assigned disciplines.
Generalists perform Hematology, Coagulation, Chemistry/Immunology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and Blood Bank specialties.
Chemistry/Immunology includes Chemistry, Specialized Chemistry, Immunology, Molecular, and Serology testing.
Hematology involves Hematology, Coagulation, and Urinalysis testing.
Microbiology encompasses Bacteriology, Parasitology, Virology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Susceptibilities, and Molecular testing.
Blood Bank duties relate to transfusion medicine and blood product distribution.
Anatomic Pathology procedures involve histological processes for routine, special stains, and immunohistochemistry.
