About the team and position
Join the Engineering Database team, a vital part of Carvana.com. Be part of a team that guides the development of scalable, reliable, and efficient data-driven applications, ensuring accurate and timely analytics and business process development. We're disrupting the car buying status quo, and you can be a part of that, making an immediate and significant impact on peoples car buying experience.
We're searching for a talented and professionally curious individual ready to make a significant impact by driving the evolution of our cloud-based data infrastructure. You'll apply your strong foundation in T-SQL (preferably Azure) to build and optimize database objects, author complex stored procedures, functions, and triggers that power Carvana.com applications. Your primary focus will be at the forefront of cloud administration for our SQL and Elastic environments, where you'll be instrumental in building and maintaining scalable and reliable data solutions. Experience with ETL processes (Databricks or SSIS is a definite plus) is highly valued as we continuously enhance our data pipelines and push the boundaries of what's possible.
What you'll be doing

- Design & Implement: Scalable, secure, and highly available database solutions that meet business and technical objectives.
- Database Development: Engineer and optimize SQL objects, including stored procedures, user-defined functions, triggers, and views to support application logic and data transformation.
- Cloud Administration: Maintain our SQL and Cosmos databases in Azure in addition to Elastic Cloud resources. Additionally maintain a system of alerts providing system status and environment health.
- Performance Optimization: Proactively identify, diagnose, and resolve database performance bottlenecks. Perform query tuning, index management, and execution plan analysis to ensure optimal application responsiveness.
- Data Integration: Develop, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines and data integration workflows using tools (e.g., Databricks or SSIS) to populate data warehouses and data marts.
- Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Provide subject matter expertise to software engineering teams on database best practices. Mentor junior developers, conduct thorough code reviews, and establish and enforce database development standards.
- AI-Assisted Development: Leverage generative AI and intelligent coding assistants to accelerate development, optimize query creation, and assist in troubleshooting complex database issues.
- 5+ years of progressive experience in database development, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead role
- Database Systems: Administration of cloud technologies, preferably on Azure (e.g. Azure SQL Database, Cosmos DB, etc.) or Elastic Cloud.
- Procedural Language: Strong foundation of T-SQL including DDL & DML and authoring complex stored procedures, functions and triggers
- Performance Tuning: Ability to perform query optimization, index management, and execution plan analysis.
- ETL/ELT Development: Hands-on experience building and managing data integration pipelines using tools such as SSIS, Databricks or similar technologies.
- Notifications: Maintain a system of alerts for the cloud environment ensuring stability and performance
- SDLC & CI/CD: Proficiency with modern development practices, including source control (e.g., Git), database project management, and participating in CI/CD pipelines.
- Leadership & Mentorship: Proven ability to provide technical leadership, mentor junior developers, and enforce development standards through constructive code reviews.
- Problem-Solving: Exceptional analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex data-related issues.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of creating detailed technical documentation and explaining complex concepts to diverse audiences.
- AI Familiarity: Experience using generative AI coding assistants to improve development velocity and code quality.
- Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills and a history of successful collaboration with cross-functional teams, including application developers, business analysts, and data scientists.
