About Georgia Tech Advanced Battery Center (GTABC)
The Georgia Tech Advanced Battery Center (GTABC) is dedicated to advancing energy storage research, technology translation, commercialization, and education. GTABC is focused on engaging with industry to accelerate manufacturing and workforce development in the energy storage and electrification space, including through the development of the GTABC Pilot Facility. GTABC is supported by multiple Interdisciplinary Research Institutes (IRIs) at Georgia Tech, including the Strategic Energy Institute, the Institute for Matter and Systems, and the GT Manufacturing Institute.

Job SummaryThe GTABC Managing Director will lead the development and operation of the GTABC Pilot Facility, an 8500 square foot battery pilot manufacturing facility on campus that is designed to accelerate battery and energy storage technology translation for industry and academia. In partnership with the GTABC Faculty Directors, the GTABC Managing Director will be responsible for the operation of this R&D facility, including industry outreach as well as management of associated staff. The Managing Director will also lead GTABC's efforts in identifying, developing, and executing partnerships with companies and other entities to advance energy storage R&D and education. Occasional travel is required
ResponsibilitiesJob Duty 1
Finalize design and prioritize equipment needs for the GTABC battery pilot facility, which will be focused on building and testing batteries with lithium-ion and sodium-ion chemistries in conjunction with users/customers. Work with the GTABC Faculty Directors and other stakeholders on the renovation, construction, and equipment installation for the GTABC pilot facility.
Job Duty 2
Develop and implement a usage and operational plan for the GTABC pilot facility with a focus on achieving satisfactory battery cell yields and high quality, along with operational safety.
Job Duty 3
Oversee, maintain, and improve facility operational capabilities over time, including through new equipment acquisition and equipment maintenance. Propose anticipated infrastructure and budgetary needs to leadership aligning with internal opportunities and deadlines.
Job Duty 4
Remain aware of regional, national and global advances in energy storage technologies. Work closely with potential internal and external collaborators to design research projects that quickly advance innovative technologies in this area.
Job Duty 5
Develop and execute contracts and partnerships with companies and other potential users of the facility, and work with users/clients and facility staff to carry out battery-related fabrication, testing, and R&D in collaboration with users/clients. Collaborate with Office of Corporate Engagement and IRI Industry Liaisons to optimize engagement.
Job Duty 6
Develop and implement plans for expanding relationships between faculty/students and companies in the energy storage space, including through a consortium or other mechanisms. Build relationships with key users/customers and engage broadly to identify new opportunities and projects.
Job Duty 7
Manage the experience of facility users/customers through regular implementation of satisfaction surveys, systematic collection and analysis of user needs, and responsive action to feedback from user/customer groups.
Job Duty 8
Perform other related job duties as assigned including, but not limited to, presenting on behalf of GTABC and/or coordinating/contributing to proposals to federal agencies or other entities.
Required QualificationsThis position vacancy is an open rank announcement. Research Engineer II
* A Master's degree, and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience (in a relevant science or engineering field) after completion of that degree, or
* A Master's degree, and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience (in a relevant science or engineering field) after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
* A Doctoral degree.
Senior Research Engineer
* A Master's degree, and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience (in a relevant science or engineering field) after completion of that degree, or
* A Master's degree, and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience (in a relevant science or engineering field) after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
* A Doctoral degree, and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience (in a relevant science or engineering field) after completion of a Bachelor's degree.
Preferred Qualifications- A minimum of five years of related experience.
- Experience in battery manufacturing, with knowledge of the state-of-the-art processes for battery manufacturing (process controls, materials, safety, achieving yield, etc.)
- Management and supervisory experience.
- Outstanding and proven ability to build and maintain strong interpersonal and professional working relationships with a wide range of constituents.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, develop strategy, and make decisions.
- Excellent oral and communication skills related to science and technology.
- Experience with managing budgets.
- A Ph.D. in a relevant science or engineering field.
- Direct experience in state-of-the-art battery materials, cell formulations, and battery manufacturing process control.
- Previous experience with identifying, developing, and executing industry partnerships.
- Budget management including ROI analysis and financial projections.
- Strong relationship management skills needed to build and retain an external user/customer base.
- Familiarity with engineering methods like FMEA, design of experiments, and statistical process control.
