We are seeking a Construction and Sustainability Manager to join our team
Reporting to the Director, the Construction & Sustainability Manager will oversee the successful delivery of branch facility projects, with an emphasis on sustainability, energy efficiency, and green building practices including building envelope, PV arrays, EV charging infrastructure and HVAC upgrades and maintenance. Additionally, this Construction & Sustainability Manager will consult on energy efficiency with other construction managers on their own projects.
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented collaborative problem-solver with a background in commercial construction and demonstrated success managing environmentally focused upgrades and renovations.
WHAT You'll DO:
PRE-CONSTRUCTION & CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
- Manage assigned branch renovation and construction projects from planning through closeout.
- Oversee schedules, budgets, and contractor coordination, ensuring delivery within scope and timeframe.
- Lead weekly OAC meetings for assigned projects; provide timely updates and documentation.
- Conduct site visits to assess progress, troubleshoot issues, and ensure quality control.
- Coordinate with internal teams to minimize disruptions to branch operations during construction.
- Develop and guide projects utilizing LEED best practices and Self-Help's green building standards.
- Obtain bids for work such as PV arrays and EV charging infrastructure and conduct feasibility studies.
- Collaborate with design and engineering consultants to implement sustainable solutions aligned with institutional goals.
- Serve as the energy efficiency subject matter expert and consult with all construction managers on their projects.
- Manage projects that include solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, EV charging infrastructure, energy-efficient HVAC retrofits, and other green upgrades.
- Monitor the ongoing operations of green upgrades to ensure they are performing properly
- Manage routine and corrective maintenance on the systems.
- Lead permitting and regulatory coordination with local authorities and utility providers.
- Track and maintain all documentation for solar and energy efficiency projects.
- Apply for and secure all government tax credits and other rebates.
- Establish parameters for HVAC control as we roll out our new centralized system for managing energy consumption.
- Work closely with team leadership and the broader Facilities team to align project goals and priorities.
- Maintain clear and consistent communication with vendors, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
- Support supplier diversity by actively engaging W/MBE subcontractors where possible.
- Continually evaluate processes and procedures to ensure the team is operating at peak efficiency and serving as responsible stewards of our members' money.
- Be responsive to the input and requests of the Facilities team leader.
- Act as a change agent to drive Self-Help's economic inclusion initiatives by integrating supplier diversity and the use of businesses owned by women and people of color in third party contracting and vendor management for relevant products and services.
- Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.
- Bachelor's degree in construction management, Engineering, or related field, OR equivalent experience.
- Minimum 5 years of commercial construction experience, with at least 2 years in energy-efficient or sustainable building projects.
- Accreditation as LEED AP or experience with LEED certified projects and/or other green building certifications is a plus. Insert additional certifications here.
- Hold one or more certifications in energy management such as Certified Energy Manager® - CEM® or Certified Building Commissioning Professional - CBCP®
- Experience managing solar PV installations, EV charging infrastructure, or green mechanical system upgrades required.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of evolving construction management practices and promote ongoing learning opportunities related to emerging products and materials, with a focus on energy efficiency best practices.
- Familiarity with AIA construction documents, construction budgeting, and project scheduling tools.
- Strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Project management, design and construction management experience and skills involving retail construction and rehabilitation. Financial Institution, medical office, or restaurant construction experience a plus.
- Ability to manage construction projects while keeping the branch operational with minimal disruption to member service.

Compensation:
Competitive nonprofit compensation, based on experience, plus a generous benefits package. Compensation ranges for each position are based on local market rates and will be determined by geography, role, and experience.
Salary range for Chicago, IL: $88,400-$132,600
