Job Description

The Equipment Services Division ensures all city departments have a well-maintained fleet to support timely and efficient operations. What you will do:
Performs responsible skilled automotive equipment maintenance work repairing automobiles, trucks, and related heavy and off-road equipment.

Expected Hiring Range: Expected hiring range: $43,201.60 - $47,521.76. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications. A starting salary above the range listed may be considered for highly qualified individuals not to exceed the maximum of the grade.
Examples of Duties

Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance:
  • Inspect, service, and repair heavy trucks, trailers, and various other equipment, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
  • Perform thorough diagnostic assessments on complex vehicle systems, including electronically controlled diesel engines, electrical and mobile electronic systems, air and braking systems, and hydraulic systems.
  • Inspect vehicle components, including body, chassis, and auxiliary systems, conducting preventative maintenance and repairing any failed parts.
Repair and Diagnostics:
  • Diagnose and repair issues related to the mechanical and electronic systems of city vehicles.
  • Assess equipment lifespan, recommend replacement, or advise on appropriate life cycle usage to maximize fleet efficiency.
  • Utilize fleet maintenance software to maintain accurate records of repairs and services completed.
Tire Services:
  • Perform essential tire services, including flat tire repairs and tire replacements, ensuring that vehicles are in safe operating condition.
Documentation and Communication:
  • Interpret manuals, electrical diagrams, and diagnostic software to accurately diagnose and repair equipment issues.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of fleet operations to ensure repair needs are met and completed to customer satisfaction.
Safety and Compliance:
  • Inspect city vehicles for compliance with state and city safety standards.
  • Ensure all repair work adheres to OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies to maintain a safe work environment.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Equipment Repair Methods: Thorough understanding of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of trucks, construction vehicles, refuse equipment, and other maintenance machinery.
  • Tool and Machinery Operation: Skilled in using and operating a variety of tools and machinery used in equipment repair, including shop tools such as drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, welders, and cutting torch operations.
  • Diagnostic and Testing Equipment: Proficient in operating complex diagnostic and testing equipment to identify mechanical issues, detecting worn or broken parts through detailed inspection.
  • Computer and Record Keeping: Capable of using computer systems to record repair notes, manage work orders, track service operations, and generate detailed reports on repair activities.
  • Blueprint and Diagram Interpretation: Ability to interpret and work with diagrams, installation charts, and repair blueprints to guide and ensure proper repairs.
  • Instructional Adherence: Ability to follow both oral and written instructions accurately, ensuring repairs are completed in line with provided guidelines.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Excellent communication skills, able to work effectively with garage staff and other City employees to ensure smooth operations.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to maintain positive working relationships with both City employees and the general public, ensuring cooperation and professionalism in all interactions.
Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Extensive work experience in heavy duty equipment such as tractors, loaders and large gasoline and diesel trucks, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid NC Driver's license
Special Requirements
  • Class (B) CDL driver's license or the ability to obtain within twelve months of employment date. We will assist you with obtaining it if needed.
  • Must obtain NCI and OBD II (On-Board Diagnostic Certification Program for emissions) State Inspection Certificate after twelve-month probation period is completed.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Work in this class is described as strenuous and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and move objects.
  • Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions.
  • Employees must have the visual acuity to perform detailed inspection of small defects or parts, use measurement devices, and assemble parts at distances close to the eyes.
  • Employees must also have the visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and use machines such as hoists, lifts, and perform semi-skilled tasks of a non-repetitive in support of trades' personnel.
  • The employee is subject to hazards, including moving mechanical equipment, electrical current, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, and dust.
  • This employee may work in close quarters, crawl spaces, small enclosures and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.
  • Working conditions include inside and outside environmental conditions.
