Responsibilities (selected)

  • Provide and monitor high-quality medical services for SSLCs, including diagnoses and treatment of neurological conditions in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Conduct neurology clinics at SSLCs (in person or via telemedicine) when local Neurologist is unavailable.
  • Offer guidance to state office discipline coordinators, SSLC facility administrators, and other clinical staff on neurological disorders.
  • Develop treatment plans with measurable goals and interventions for neurological concerns; participate in meetings/committees as needed (mortality review, QA/QI, morning medical meetings, polypharmacy, psychiatric clinics).
  • Collaborate with local neurologists and interdisciplinary teams to ensure integration of medical care.
  • Provide staff education and training on neurological issues and participate in ISP/ISP-A meetings as needed.
  • Ensure accurate medical documentation, required reporting, and adherence to training requirements; review hospital discharges and ensure continuity of care.
  • Work with the medical services department to review service quality, identify trends, and support improvement plans; participate in disaster response/COOP as required.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Advanced knowledge of neurological disorders (epilepsy, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, stroke, dementia, Parkinsons disease, etc.).
  • Experience with general medicine and development/implementation of individualized care plans.
  • Ability to work with psychiatric conditions; knowledge of medical jurisprudence; ability to learn HHSC policies and ICF-IID standards.
  • Clinical skills in diagnosing and treating neurological conditions; ability to communicate effectively with nurses, direct care staff, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to coordinate care with other providers and ensure alignment of treatment plans; maintain continuing medical education hours.

Registrations, Licensure and Certifications

  • Licensed medical doctor in the State of Texas.
  • Current DEA registration.
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI) as defined by Medicare Part B; enrollment as Medicaid/Medicare Part B provider.

Initial Screening Criteria

  • Graduation from an accredited medical college (MD/DO).
  • Board certification in Neurology (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology) preferred or board-eligible candidates with residency training.
  • Clinical experience in neurology; experience leading or managing others preferred.
