General Summary of PositionEvaluates drugs prescribed by physicians for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interaction and contraindications; processes prescriptions through insurance company and handles DUR rejects, pre?authorizations, etc.; performs final check on all prescriptions ensuring accurate input, labeling and dispensing; provides counseling and drug information to patients and physicians. Primary Duties And Responsibilities- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
- Acts as the pharmacist in charge in the absence of the manager: directing workflow patterns, ensuring daily responsibilities are carried out by assigned staff, resolving issues requiring management intervention and performing routine oversight of pharmacy operations.
- Performs final check on all completed prescriptions verifying the accuracy of input, labeling and dispensing; makes corrections as necessary; maintains refill and narcotic logs and prescription files.
- Processes prescriptions in the dispensing system; evaluates prescriptions for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interactions and contraindications; handles DURs, rejects, preauthorizations, etc.; communicates with third?party payors to troubleshoot issues relating to coverage, reimbursement, etc.
- Provides clinical information and guidance to physicians and allied health professionals as appropriate to provide safe, prompt and accurate dispensing of all prescriptions; calls physicians and follows up on refill requests; notifies physicians of Rxs requiring pre?authorizations and discusses alternatives as appropriate.
- Provides patient counseling as appropriate on a patient?by?patient basis.
- Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts; participates in multi?disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Education
- Licensed as a pharmacist in the State of Maryland or District of Columbia (DC) required.
- 12 years Pharmacy experience, preferably in retail, required.
- PHARMD: Licensed Pharmacist. Current Maryland or DC Pharmacist license, including Immunization/Vaccination Certification and registration with the board of pharmacy in that state or district required.
- CPR: Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 days required.
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
Hiring range: USD $49.33 - $86.10 /Hr.
