Board Member Job Description
Frameline’s mission
Frameline’s mission is to change the world through the power of queer film. As a media arts non-profit, Frameline’s programs connect filmmakers and audiences in San Francisco and around the world. Frameline’s integrated programs provide critical funding for emerging LGBTQ+ filmmakers, reach hundreds of thousands with a collection of more than 250 films distributed nationally, and create an international stage for the world’s best queer film through the San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival and additional screenings and cinematic events.
As the highest leadership body of the organization and to satisfy its fiduciary duties, the Board is responsible for:
- Support the mission and the purposes of the organization.
- Fundraise and resource development.
- Select and evaluate the performance of the Executive Director.
- Assist in strategic and organizational planning.
- Ensure strong fiduciary oversight and financial management.
- Approve and monitor Frameline’s programs and services.
- Enhance Frameline’s public image.
- Assess its own performance as the governing body of Frameline.
- Recruit and orient new Board members who can help further the organization’s mission.
Expectations of Individual Board Members
Each individual Board member is expected to:
- Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs and needs.
- Read and understand the organization’s financial statement.
- Serve as advocates and ambassadors of the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for Frameline to advance its mission.
- Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to achieve Frameline’s mission.
- Give a meaningful personal financial donation of $7,500.00 annually.
- Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing.
- Prepare for, attend and participate in Board meetings.
- Participate in one or more committees.
Board members are also expected to:
- Comply with the organization’s bylaws, policies and Board resolutions.
- Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure, and, if necessary, disclose any potential conflicts as they arise.
- Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of Frameline.
- Attend all Board meetings, with the expectation that in-person attendance will occur in four or more of the meetings (Board currently meets six to seven times a year).
- Attend the annual fundraiser and festival related events annually.
Board Term:
- The Board term is three years with a second 3-year term anticipated upon mutual agreement.
