Reports to: Building principal and/or designee General Description:
To develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive school-based health program, and deliver services (as set forth below and mandated by law and Board of Education policy) to students to enhance students' health, wellness, and educational performance. All duties are to be performed in accordance with professional standards of school nursing practice, applicable State law and regulations, and Board of Education policies and administrative procedures (as may be amended from time to time). Required Qualifications:
Employees are responsible for obtaining/retaining the most current statutory and administrative rule requirements for their position.
- Education/Training: Baccalaureate Degree or higher
- Licensure: Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL)
- Valid Illinois Hearing and Vision Screening Certification
- Valid Healthcare Provider CPR/AED certification
- Endorsement: PEL-CSN (Professional Educator License-Certified School Nurse)
- Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of prior professional nursing experience, preferably pediatric, adolescent, community or mental health nursing, and health program management.
- Knowledge/Abilities/Skills: Ability to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position.

Coordination
- Participates in the development, implementation, and overseeing a comprehensive school-based health program.
- Helps to provide a safe school environment so students can concentrate on learning.
- Collects and analyzes epidemiological and other District health information and makes recommendations based upon statistical data provided by the District.
- Assists in the development of an accident/injury prevention program to facilitate safety within the school.
- Determines the impact of students' contagious illnesses and acts to prevent the spread of communicable disease in the school setting.
- Assists in the assessment of the health and safety needs of the District and/or building in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, implementing the Bloodborne Pathogen Control Plan and other interventions as indicated.
- Follows a communicable disease prevention and control program in cooperation with local and State public health agencies.
- Manages District and/or building health records in accordance with the Illinois School Student Records Act, providing efficient retrieval of information and other related archival responsibilities.
- Participates in Child Find programs and establishes and manages health screening programs according to State requirements and rules.
- Participates in the development of health-related Board of Education policies and administrative procedures in compliance with State law and current/best health practices.
- Recommends modifications to District and/or building programs for students who require accommodations because of health concerns and/or issues.
- Develops and maintains healthcare plans for students who need required and/or special nursing interventions during the school day.
- Collaborates with other staff in assessing, writing, and implementing student behavior plans.
- Identifies resources and information about health-related services in the community and provides and/or shares this information/these services to students and parents.
- Assists with Monitoring monthly student attendance and coordinates and/or implements interventions.
- Provides and/or presents staff in-service programs on health-related topics, as necessary, including, but not limited to, bloodborne pathogens and the District's exposure control plan, when necessary.
- Provides needed health education in the classroom.
- Provides students with learning opportunities that promote individual and community health. Clinical Practice
- Provides, delegates and/or administers direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students, including, but not limited to, nursing assessment, identifying health problems, making referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommending educational modifications, providing follow-up and evaluation, and maintaining appropriate documentation.
- Screens for student health problems that impact education.
- Identifies and manages students' health concerns so they are able and ready to learn.
- Provides health information and counseling for students and parents.
- Develops and administers a medication protocol to safely store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of medication given at school.
- Supervises and/or provides screening and follow-up for deficits in vision, hearing, growth and development, and other physical and/or medical deficits.
- Maintains accurate school health records to assure compliance with State requirements, including, but not limited to, immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions.
- Participates as a crisis team member and provides crisis intervention for students in the situation(s) of sudden illness or injury.
- Makes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter. Health Office Management
- Maintains a user friendly and organized health services facility conducive to confidential communication and services.
- Assists students in accessing health care.
- Purchases and maintains health and OSHA supplies and equipment as indicated for the building's health office and District.
- Manages and makes recommendations for the health services annual budget and critical needs requests.
- Maintains compliance as required by the Illinois School Code and Illinois Department of Public Health for physical examination, medical conditions, and immunization records.
- Acts as Lead Nurse to Non-Certified Registered Nurses, one-to-one nurses, Health aides, clerical aides, health service volunteers, and other healthcare providers for students working in the school.
- Acts as a liaison between home and school by communicating with parents regarding students' health and safety needs and develops plans to meet those needs at school.
- Maintains communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action, which will meet the health and safety needs of students.
- Initiates contact with and acts as a liaison between the home, District, community health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of students and the greater school community.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding all District, building, and student health-related issues.
- Participates in health-related community activities as a representative of the District.
- Conducts medical review component of student case study evaluations and re-evaluations under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act pursuant to Article 14 of the Illinois School Code and 23 Illinois Administrative Code 226.160.
- Completes mandated hearing and vision screenings for students as necessary.
- Attend eligibility meetings to review medical review component of case study evaluations.
- Completes and presents health histories as part of case study evaluations
- Attend IEP meetings, as necessary, to suggest necessary modifications and accommodations, as determined necessary by medical review component of student case study evaluations.
- Collaborates with Student Services Department and provide advice relative to home hospital services.
- Develops and maintains current health care plans for students who need special nursing interventions during the school day.
- Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the identification, evaluation, and placement of students into special education programs.
- Writes the health component of the Individual Education Plan (IEP).
- Participates as a member of professional school nursing and education organizations and utilizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge in both nursing and education fields.
- Participates as an active member of the school community, representing health/wellness.
- Participates as a member of the faculty on District committees and professional association activities.
