Principal Responsibilities:

Working at Y's SONYC Afterschool Program at Columbia Secondary School.
Columbia Secondary School is a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) focused public school that serves students in the sixth through tenth grades. The program is focused on leadership, STEM, Social-Emotional Learning, community service, and academics. Students engage in weekly hikes, gardening initiatives, STEM activities, job shadowing, and college readiness programs.

Position: Part-time Group Leader at SONYC After School at Columbia Secondary School

POSITION OVERVIEW
Group leaders are responsible for academic tutoring and assisting lead instructors in preparing students to demonstrate newly acquired skills in STEM, leadership, sports, and the arts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Organize, lead, and promote the students' interest and participation in the activities offered by the program.
  • Foster an atmosphere of fun and learning, and serve as a role model to students, always professionally conducting yourself and maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior, and procedures for maintaining order among the students.
  • Provide academic support, homework guidance, assistance, and supervision to students.
  • Promote positive character development.
  • Maintain effective classroom management that encourages full participation and student growth.
  • Supervise groups of students while maintaining their physical and emotional safety and health.
  • Closely coordinate with the Program Director and coworkers for any programmatic changes or any other issues or concerns.
  • Participate in staff meetings, program evaluations, program improvement, and professional. development sessions throughout the school year.
  • Provide other program support as needed.
POSITION TYPE / EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
  • Part-time position.
  • You are available to work Monday-Friday, 2:30 pm - 6 pm (15-20 hours per week) with room for flexibility.
SALARY
  • $18 per hour.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work is performed in a typical community center and school environment.
TRAVEL:
  • Able to travel to various sites in New York City (mainly Washington Heights and Morning side Heights) for training sessions.
Minimum Qualifications:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Strong academic skills and knowledge of New York State standards and test preparation.
  • Genuine interest in working with culturally diverse 6th-8th Grade students, and being able to promote positive character development.
  • A sincere desire to effect positive social and academic change in the lives of NYC youth.
  • Well-organized, reliable, and punctual.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Can work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Comfortable learning and modeling universal Jewish values while working in and with a large, diverse population.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma.
  • Experience working with youth in a classroom, after-school, or community-based environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor or Associate Degree in progress.
  • Experience as a Group Leader using a positive youth development model.
WORK AUTHORIZATION & CLEARANCE:
  • Documentation of U.S. citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S.
  • Must pass the background check, medical exams, fingerprinting, and other requirements of the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Education (DOE), and Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).
