Director of Purchasing

The Procurement Director is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing the organization's procurement operations, ensuring the sourcing and acquisition of goods and services align with business goals, budgetary constraints, and sustainability initiatives. This leadership role is pivotal in shaping procurement strategy, optimizing vendor relationships, driving cost efficiency, and ensuring compliance with quality and regulatory standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
o Strategic Leadership:
o Develop and execute a company-wide procurement strategy aligned with corporate objectives, emphasizing cost optimization, risk management, and operational efficiency.
o Supplier Management:
o Build, manage, and evaluate relationships with key suppliers and vendors. Negotiate high-value contracts and long-term agreements to secure favorable terms and minimize supply chain risk.
o Team Leadership:
o Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing procurement team. Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and collaboration.
o Process Optimization:
o Identify and implement best practices, systems, and tools to improve procurement processes, data transparency, and spend analysis.
o Budget Management:
o Develop and manage procurement budgets, forecasts, and cost-saving initiatives. Monitor key procurement metrics and KPIs to measure performance.
o Cross Functional Collaboration:
o Partner with finance, legal, operations, product development, and other departments to support business initiatives and ensure alignment with procurement strategy.
o Risk & Compliance:
o Ensure procurement practices comply with internal policies, legal regulations, and ethical standards. Proactively manage supply chain risks and ensure business continuity planning.
o Technical Requirements
o Knowledge in operating in ERP systems
o Experience with Source-to-Pay systems
o Excellent communication skills - written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal
o Ability to develop, release and manage the RFP process
o Strong capability in developing category strategies
o Expert knowledge of contract negotiation & vendor management
o Proven track record of identifying and delivering savings opportunities
o Extensive experience in vendor negotiations
o Effective facilitation and presentation skills
o Good analytical skills (including process and data analysis)
o Strong financial acumen
o Goals and Objectives
o Develop and Implement a Scalable Procurement Strategy:
§ Design and execute a comprehensive procurement roadmap that aligns with company growth targets, operational needs, and financial objectives.
§ Establish short- and long-term goals for cost reduction, process efficiency, and supplier performance.
o Achieve Tangible Cost Savings and Operational Efficiencies:
§ Identify and implement sourcing opportunities that lead to measurable cost savings without compromising quality or service delivery.
§ Leverage data and analytics to drive smarter purchasing decisions and reduce maverick or non-compliant spending.
o Improve Cross-Functional Collaboration:
§ Strengthen partnerships with internal stakeholders (e.g., finance, operations, product development) to align procurement goals with company-wide initiatives.
§ Lead cross-functional sourcing projects that support innovation, sustainability, and customer satisfaction.
o Build and Develop a High-Performing Procurement Team:
§ Recruit, mentor, and retain top procurement talent.
§ Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and development plans across the procurement function to support scalability and succession planning.
o Ensure Risk Mitigation and Compliance:
§ Implement policies and procedures that ensure compliance with internal controls, legal regulations, and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) initiatives.
§ Proactively monitor geopolitical, financial, and logistical risks to maintain supply chain resilience.
o Optimize Supplier and Vendor Performance:
§ Consolidate and streamline the vendor base to enhance service levels and reduce redundancies.
§ Introduce supplier scorecards and performance metrics to evaluate and improve vendor reliability, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
o Enhance Procurement Technology and Systems:
§ Evaluate current procurement tools and systems; lead the implementation or optimization of procurement platforms (e.g., ERP, e-sourcing, spend analytics).
§ Drive automation and digital transformation within procurement processes to improve speed, accuracy, and visibility.
Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
o Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training
o Wear proper personal protective equipment as required for the task or work area
o Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately
Technical and Physical Requirements
o Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Finance, or related field (Master's or MBA preferred)
o 10+ years of progressive procurement or supply chain experience, including 5+ years in senior leadership roles
o Proven track record in strategic sourcing, global procurement, contract negotiation, and supplier relationship management
o Strong analytical and financial acumen, with experience managing multi-million-dollar budgets
o Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills, preferably within the procurement function
o Familiarity with ERP and procurement platforms (e.g., Oracle, Coupa, Ariba, etc.)
o Industry knowledge in the marine/boating industry is a plus
o Any skills considered standard that a Director of Procurement should possess
