Job Description
The Director of Data Center Facilities Engineering will lead a dedicated team of Data Center Facility Engineers and Technicians, managing the technical infrastructure of our data center fleet operated by colocation partners. This role is critical in ensuring that operational uptime performance targets are consistently met, maintenance activities are conducted safely, and technical projects are executed with transparency and efficiency.
As the leader of the Data Center Facilities Engineering (DCFE) team, you will work closely with colocation providers to ensure continuous availability of power and cooling systems. Your key responsibilities will encompass change management, incident support, space optimization, efficiency upgrades, and comprehensive engineering assistance. Additionally, you will take charge of strategic planning initiatives for your regions, overseeing HR responsibilities like performance evaluations, coaching, development, and securing top talent.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, with extensive knowledge of data center electrical, cooling, and control systems. Significant expertise with UPS, generators, chillers, and cooling operations is necessary; experience with liquid to chip cooling is especially valued.
Professional Engineer Certification (e.g., Chartered Engineer) is preferred, but not mandatory.
A minimum of 15 years in data center operations, design, or construction within mission-critical facilities is required.
At least 8 years of experience in people management or leading technical teams is essential.
Exceptional presentation skills, capable of translating complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
Experience in scaling operations for growth, enhancing processes, and driving consistency across geographically distributed data centers is highly regarded.
Responsibilities:
Managerial:
Oversee and support a diverse team of mechanical and electrical engineers globally.
Set clear objectives and provide regular, constructive feedback focused on employee growth.
Engage in strategic planning for organizational development and provide senior management with actionable recommendations.
Lead critical projects from initiation to completion while ensuring optimal resource utilization and vendor collaboration.
Implement effective change management practices to minimize operational disruptions.
Guarantee adherence to procedures for maximum uptime and safety in maintenance operations.
Maintain up-to-date tracking of incidents, ensuring thorough root cause analysis.
Develop metrics for effective management of space, power, cooling, and CAPEX, ensuring efficient resource allocation.
Facilitate communication between teams and foster a collaborative work environment.
Drive continuous improvement through standardized methods and cross-functional teamwork.
Technical/Functional:
Interpret electrical schematics and mechanical diagrams effectively.
Critically assess engineering deployments and associated risks at colocation sites.
Establish and refine maintenance schedules and procedures to ensure operational consistency.
Analyze energy efficiency initiatives and support ongoing optimization efforts.
Review and approve maintenance and operating procedures for safety and potential impact.
Supervise contractor maintenance activities to ensure compliance with safety and management guidelines.
Upkeep Oracle’s change management policies within all operational scope.
Support the installation of electrical and cooling infrastructures for new equipment.
Administrative:
Ensure accuracy and completeness of reports submitted by service providers.
Report on key performance indicators relevant to space, power, and uptime.
Manage and execute within an established annual budget.
Compliance:
Obtain necessary approvals for work conducted in data centers.
Adhere to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s business and supplier guidelines.
Comply with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure EH&S standards.
Participate in mandatory training sessions.
Assist with LOB business process audits.
Communications/Customer Relationships:
Build strong relationships with Facility Management partners.
Represent Oracle in quarterly colocation meetings.
Core Skills:
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and email.
Comprehensive understanding of building electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety systems.
Strong interpersonal skills for effective relationship management.
Excellent problem-solving abilities.
Capability to synthesize complex information into clear executive summaries.
Proficient in reading and interpreting construction drawings.
Salary and Benefits:
This role offers a competitive salary range of $120,100 to $251,600 per annum, with eligibility for bonuses, equity compensation, and benefits including medical, dental, vision insurance, disability coverage, 401(k) matching, paid parental leave, and generous vacation policies.
