The New Mexico Medical Board (NMMB) is the state agency responsible for the regulation over 10,000 licensees including medical doctors (physicians), physician assistants, anesthesiologist assistants, genetic counselors, polysomnographic technologists, naturopaths and naprapaths.

Why does the job exist?
The position exists to fill the need for a qualified, clinical expert as required for both licensure and regulation (discipline) of all medical professions licensed by the board, which includes physicians, (MD and DO), physician assistants, genetic counselors, polysomnographers, naturopaths, naprapaths, and anesthesiology assistants. The board licenses over 11,000 licensees and clinical care issues that only a clinician can review makes a Medical Director fundamentally important to the Board's mandate to protect the public through the proper regulation and licensing of its licensees. The Medical Director serves as the Board's expert in the execution of this function.
How does it get done?
Duties for this position include:
- Reviewing applications for licensure to determine eligibility for licensure
- Serving as the Board's liaison on committees related to board activities that require physician participation
- Serving as a consultant on medical practice issues
- Reviewing and recommending rule and policy changes
- Providing medical review and assistance to requests from the Investigation's Department
- Other assignments directed by the Chair, Board and Executive Director

The New Mexico Medical Board (NMMB) key stakeholders such as The New Mexico Medical Board members, legislators, NMMB leadership and staff, applicants for licenses, current license holders, individuals requesting license reinstatement, patients, insurance companies, hospitals, clinics, attorneys, constituents, and other boards and agencies.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience with a Board and significant knowledge of Board functionality.
- Experience with the Open Meetings Act, Inspection of Public Records Act and the Medical Practice Act.
- Must have knowledge of medical education and medical processes supporting safe and competent medical care.
Minimum Qualification
Requires an MD or DO, licensure and certification to practice in New Mexico.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive phone and personal computer usage. Direct client interaction and some travel may be required.
