Chief Pharmacy Officer

The Chief Pharmacy Officer is an executive position responsible for comprehensive strategic and operational pharmacy services leadership for Providence Health System. The CPO will lead the transformation of pharmacy services across all divisions, bridging leadership in delivering pharmaceutical strategies system-wide. The individual ensures safe, effective, high?value, and accountable pharmaceutical services that enhance affordability, patient experience, and health outcomes. The role is a member of the Providence clinical senior executive leadership team, driving a high?performance delivery system.

This position may be located in Seattle, WA; Irvine, CA; or Portland, OR.

Leadership oversight

• Accountability for financial sustainability, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and clinical and quality program oversight.
• Execute pharmacy strategies and tactics through a defined management structure and governance framework across business units.
• Lead the system pharmacy governance council, coordinating with pharmacy leaders across regions.
• Engage on Providence leadership councils to integrate the voice of pharmacy in system-wide initiatives.
• Build relationships with medical staff and participate in the system P&T committee, Clinical Care, and CQO and CNO offices.
• Maintain high employee morale and support management staff development.
• Lead the Providence Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and develop a high?performing formulary.
• Advance the Providence St.?Joseph formulary through collaborative initiatives.

Pharmacy technology investment oversight

• Guide regional and system decisions on technology investments.
• Utilize the pharmacy governance council for technology justification, approval, and deployment.
• Sanction workgroups to assess technology needs and lead them.
• Partner with Informatics, pharmacy directors, and IT leaders to implement technology and achieve triple?aim measures.

Pharmaceutical supply chain oversight

• Oversee procurement and supply chain practices to maximize efficiencies.
• Coordinate with Clinical Program Services and Supply Chain Shared Services to negotiate contracts and lower unit costs.
• Manage all contracts with pharmacy suppliers and manufacturers.

Quality and safety oversight

• Lead medication management quality initiatives across the system.
• Promote a culture of safety through consultation and system deployment.
• Support medication safety programs and participate in safety committees.
• Advocate for policy improvements through engagement with stakeholders and national organizations.

Relationship management oversight

• Maintain collaborative relationships with pharmacy leaders.
• Participate in recruitment, retention, and personnel evaluation decisions.
• Build relationships with executives, physicians, and clinical leaders.
• Engage in strategic planning activities.
• Partner with colleges of pharmacy to support student growth, residency, and research.

Pharmacy workforce development oversight

• Establish safe, supportive work environments system-wide.
• Partner with HR to develop hiring, retention, and career ladder strategies.
• Build a workforce pipeline for pharmacists, PharmDs, and technicians.
• Implement retention strategies for high?performing employees.

Demonstrating business effectiveness

• Collaborate with finance and leadership on sustainability and growth.
• Participate in population management initiatives for pharmacist involvement.
• Guide financial and budget planning for operational efficiency.
• Navigate complex political situations effectively.
• Ensure compliance with professional, regulatory, and legal standards.
