Dean of Student Life/School of Rhetoric

POSITION SUMMARY
The Dean of Student Life is a full-time position for a demonstrated influential leader whose primary responsibility is to own the experience of student life, culture, and community in the School of Rhetoric. Under the guidance of the Head of Rhetoric, the Dean should be the first to identify needs or opportunities to better execute our mission, specifically in terms of shaping student community, affections, virtues, spiritual life, and behaviors, and working with faculty and administration to that end.
TARGETED GOAL
Create a vision and culture of discipleship amongst staff and students so that our students are encouraged to live the life of virtue and wisdom for Christ with joy.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Developing student leadership
- Lead Student Council and meet with President & Vice-President of Student Council (StuCo) every other week
- StuCo meetings are every other week
- Spend time with students individually and in small groups
- Lead Student Council and meet with President & Vice-President of Student Council (StuCo) every other week
- Building and fostering a sense of Christ-centered community
- Manage communications to parents and students through dean's dispatches
- Help StuCo plan activities that bring students together
- Attend semester parent meetings for each grade level
- Have a regular visible presence at various athletic and fine arts events
- Have a regular visible presence in student spaces (Knights Hall, hallways, cafeteria, Junior Wing, SOR foyer)
- Support deans responsible for clubs, retreats, class trips and spirit/team dress out days
- Promoting spiritual growth and character formation
- With Head of SOR, determine themes & speakers for chapel
- Set a vision and plan for advisory program
- Proactively engage with relevant cultural issues and topics appropriate and normal for students of that age, and create opportunities for dialogue with students.
- Shepherding and supporting the grade-level deans
- Meet weekly to discuss student behavior and activities, and to pray for students
- Observe and, at times, speak at the grade-level meetings
- Help deans manage student sicknesses
- Overseeing discipline issues
- Help students to grow through mistakes and to have a vision for themselves that they cannot see
- Set a vision and tone for how behavior issues are handled
- Support dean handling routine infractions
- Modeling leadership
- Weekly meeting with SOR Head
- Quarterly meetings with Associate Head and SOR Leadership team
- Train teachers in their discipleship of students through talks during in-service, SOR faculty meetings, and one-on-one meetings
- Create and maintain policies regarding student behavior, dress, etc.
- Teach 1-2 classes
SKILLS AND EXPERTISE
- Love of teenagers & experience working with them, 3-5 years minimally preferred
- A strong desire for and proven ability to disciple students
- Demonstrated problem-solving & multi-tasking skills
- Strong communication and relational skills with the aim of building trust with students and parents
- Ethos marked by wisdom, discretion, even-temperedness, approachability and genuineness
- Principle-based decision making with a high EQ and emotional resilience
- Ability to infuse energy into small and large group situations
- Bachelor's Degree or higher
