EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES: A typical day consists of the following tasks.
- Upon arrival to work, checks in with current shift on duty to receive vital exchange of information from personnel who are preparing to leave work.
- Performs daily safety and operational checks on equipment; including checking oil levels, grinding wheels integrity, belt tightness, polishing compound, and sand paper availability.
- Performance of duties requires the Technician to perform highly accurate work in order to maintain extremely close tolerances on tooling.
- Throughout work shift, Technician operates sophisticated equipment, instrumentation and precision measuring tools.
- During work shift, Technician collects from different production processing machines (mills)
- Roll, MSM boxes, shims, weld box, impeder rods, clamps, work coils, punch cut blades, knicker blade holders, phenolic blocks, straightener blocks
- Weights range from 1 to 400 lb.
- Wearing gloves and using a degreaser and wire scrub brush, technician will clean all items. This motion can consist of twisting, turning, pushing and lifting of hands and arms.
- After cleaning, Technician will use a micrometer (measuring instrument) to check tooling for worn down areas.
- Throughout work shift, Technician is required to be proficient in the use of a variety of measuring instruments, including Micrometers, Calipers, and Tape Measures in order to take dimensional measurements such as root diameter of rolls, Outside Diameter (OD), Inside Diameter (ID), wall thickness.
- Technician is primarily responsible for preparing quality tooling for Weld Mill machinery in a safe and timely manner.
- Responsible for maintaining accurate inventory of roll tooling. This includes performing numerical counts and documentation of results (tooling condition, location, number, etc).
- During assigned work shift, applies skills and knowledge in machining operation, mathematics and blue print reading to assigned tasks.
- Technician will utilize a polisher to hold the ID and OD tolerance of tooling and to improve and maintain surface finish on tooling.
- Performs multiple tasks, within a fast paced team work environment, in order to provide tooling required in the production of carbon steel tubing manufactured to close tolerances on Weld Mill equipment.
- Technician is required to use their skill and knowledge to work and solve problems independently.
- Regularly communicates with production workers, as well as supervisors, to determine tooling needs and specifications or to evaluate and troubleshoot a problem.
- Wash shims.
- Assist with roll changes.
- Assemble weld boxes and shim packages.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Position requires frequent walking and constant standing on concrete floor during a twelve-hour shift while wearing steel-toed shoes. Tooling Technician may walk up to two (2) miles per work shift while performing essential duties
- The ability to maintain one's balance while performing the required work tasks is essential.
- Requires concentration, patience, and physical effort when operating machinery and equipment.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- Requires frequent unassisted lifting of a variety of objects from various positions, which range in weight from 5 to 50 pounds with an average weight of 34-37 pounds.
- Use of cranes to lift rolls up to 400 lb.
- Tooling Technician utilizes a variety of hand positions such as turning, twisting and pounding, to use hand tools and manipulate equipment controls. Some tools used by the Tooling Technician file, vibrate, cut, grind, polish, and sand.
- The job is fast paced and the ability to deal with stress is essential.
- Requires ability to use tow motor to deliver tooling to the mill staging area and use jib cranes at mill locations.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge, skills and abilities: Ability to deal with stress and get along with co-workers and supervisors. Ability to read and speak English is preferred. Mathematical skills equivalent to high school level including the ability to do decimals, fractions and averages required. Knowledge of and skilled in a variety of machining operations, mathematics and blueprint reading. Must be able to communicate, both in written and verbal form, effectively with supervisors and co-workers. Regular attendance at work and punctuality are essential job functions.
- Education: High school education or equivalent is required, supplemented with technical college, vocational training, or coursework in machining or tool & die making.
- Experience: Previous experience as a machinist or tool & die maker in a small repair machining shop that repairs or makes new parts for existing production equipment. Ability to accurately read blueprints, micrometers, calipers, dial indicators and other types of measuring tools.
- Equipment: After training, must be able to operate a variety of equipment and hand tools safely and efficiently.
HOURS: Shifts consist of twelve hours, various days of the week and either day shift (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) or night shift (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.). Business needs dictate the number of shifts per week an employee is required to work.
