RN-Mental/Behavioral Health- Pediatrics FT/PT

The RN-Mental/Behavioral Health-Pediatrics position plays a critical role in supporting the mental and behavioral health needs of children within an educational setting. This role involves comprehensive assessment, intervention, and ongoing monitoring of pediatric patients experiencing mental health challenges, ensuring their well-being and academic success. The nurse collaborates closely with educators, families, and healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans tailored to each child's unique needs. By providing direct care, education, and advocacy, the RN helps create a supportive environment that promotes positive behavioral outcomes and emotional resilience. Ultimately, this position aims to enhance the overall health and educational experience of pediatric students through compassionate, evidence-based nursing care.
Note: PT positions require working 2-12-hour shifts per week.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent nursing degree.
- Experience or training in pediatric mental and behavioral health nursing.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Strong understanding of child development and mental health disorders common in pediatric populations.
- Certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (PMHN) or Pediatric Nursing (CPN).
- Experience working within educational or school-based health programs.
- Training in trauma-informed care and crisis intervention techniques.
- Knowledge of Individualized Education Programs (IEP) and 504 plans.
- Advanced certifications such as Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- Conduct thorough mental and behavioral health assessments of pediatric students to identify needs and risks.
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized nursing care plans in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Provide direct nursing care and crisis intervention to students exhibiting mental health or behavioral challenges.
- Educate students, families, and school staff on mental health conditions, coping strategies, and available resources.
- Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of nursing assessments, interventions, and outcomes in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Participate in case conferences, team meetings, and professional development activities to stay current with best practices.
- Advocate for students' mental health needs within the educational system and coordinate referrals to external healthcare providers as necessary.

The RN utilizes clinical assessment skills daily to evaluate the mental and behavioral health status of pediatric students, ensuring timely identification of concerns. Effective communication skills are essential for collaborating with educators, families, and healthcare providers to coordinate care and provide education. Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities enable the nurse to develop individualized care plans and respond appropriately to crises or behavioral emergencies. Documentation skills ensure accurate and confidential record-keeping that supports continuity of care and compliance with legal standards. Additionally, empathy and cultural competence are vital in building trust with children and families from diverse backgrounds, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.
